Patent number: 6145684Abstract: In one aspect, the present invention relates to a crate subassembly including four support cords with connector plates securing respective adjacent cords. More particularly, the connector plates extend over the interfaces between adjacent cords, and the connector plates secure adjacent cords together so as to prevent relative lateral movement between adjacent cords yet allow relative rotational movement of the cords as described below. By simply separating opposing cords, the subassembly can be easily and quickly opened. Specifically, the connector plates flex, or bend, and the connector plates have sufficient rigidity so that once opened, the subassembly does not close on itself during handling. Also, notches are formed between adjacent cords, and these notches are utilized when forming a crate as described below. To form a crate, and in an exemplary configuration, three subassemblies are positioned in a spaced relationship, and girders are positioned to extend through respective notches in each subassembly.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 1997Date of Patent: November 14, 2000Assignee: MiTek Holdings, Inc.Inventor: Michael Marc Olden

Patent number: 4230227Abstract: A folding container construction has a wooden reinforcing framework which is attached to the side (74, 75) and end walls (98, 99) of the box. The side walls (74, 75) of the box are provided with vertical struts (82, 84, 86) disposed at the peripheral edges of the walls and a single, horizontal brace (79, 80) disposed adjacent to the top of the wall. At least one horizontal reinforcing member (104, 105) is provided on each end wall of the box with the horizontal members being received by slots defined by the struts on the side walls and the horizontal brace to maintain the box configuration. The end walls (98, 99) are maintained on the base (60) of the container by the bottom surfaces of the vertical struts which seat against a bottom flap (92, 93) on the end walls when the box is constructed. In this way, the need for separately attaching the end walls to the container base is eliminated.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 1979Date of Patent: October 28, 1980Assignee: Powerpak, Inc.Inventors: James L. Patent number: 4148407Abstract: A container comprises a rectangular top, bottom and sides. The sides each have two ends which are normally vertical. There is a hinge generally adjacent the bottom and one side permitting the one side to pivot outwardly. There is an angle section with an outwardly directed flange near each end of the one side and channel sections with inwardly directed flanges on the ends of the two other sides adjacent ends of the one side. The angle sections are engageable with the channel sections to constrain outward movement of the one side about the hinge. A latch constrains inward movement of the one side when the latch is engaged. A mechanism can deflect the outwardly directed flanges to permit the one side to pivot outwardly about the hinge for loading and unloading the container.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 1978Date of Patent: April 10, 1979Inventor: Lorne R. Patent number: 4091950Abstract: A hinged knock-down returnable, self-locking bin includes a base panel, first and second side panels, first and second end panels, and first and second panel hinge means, the first panel hinge means being provided for hingedly connecting each of the side panels to a side of the base panel, and the second hinged means being provided for hingedly connecting each of the end panels to an end of the base panel. Locking meansare provided for connecting the tops of the side panels to the tops of the end panels. The bin is characterized by its simplicity of structure, the ease with which it may be erected for use in shipment, singly or in stacked interlocking relation, and the ease with which it may be collapsed so as to occupy a minimum space for storage and return shipment for further use when emptied of its contents.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 1977Date of Patent: May 30, 1978Assignee: Pennsylvania Pacific CorporationInventor: Daniel R. Patent number: 3968895Abstract: An air cargo shipping container comprising a rectangular base of molded synthetic resin material which is chemically inert to most substances, the base having a plurality of legs formed in its bottom for supporting the base above the ground. These legs are spaced for entry of the lifting tines of a forklift or the like and each leg is hollow and open at its upper end thus defining a plurality of reservoirs on the inside of the base for confining spilled cargo. The base has an integral lip around its periphery which extends up above the level of the base. The container further has three panels hingedly secured to the lip for swinging between a generally vertical, erect position and a generally horizontal, folded position in which the panels overlie the base, and a fourth or front panel. The vertical edges of adjacent panels are releasably secured together and the front panel is readily removable from the base and from the adjacent side panels so as to enable loading and unloading of the container.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 1975Date of Patent: July 13, 1976Assignees: Richard R.
