Operating Mechanism Structure Or Arrangement Patents (Class 218/154)
  • Patent number: 8735758
Abstract: A circuit breaker which includes first and second contact pairs and a contact arm arranged in series. A first arm contact and a first terminal contact from a first line terminal form a first contact pair. A second arm contact and a second terminal contact from a second line terminal contact form a second contact pair. The first contact pair, contact arm and second contact pair are connected in a series arrangement in which the air gaps formed when the first and second contact pairs are separated combine to form an effective air gap which is double in size and thus increases an interrupting capacity of the circuit breaker. An arc chamber is associated with the first and second contact pairs for extinguishing an arc formed in the air gaps. The first and second contact pairs may also be arranged in a parallel configuration for increasing an amperage rating of the circuit breaker.

Abstract: An electrical enclosure includes a mechanism for moving and/or extinguishing an arc fault occurring in a first compartment of the electrical enclosure. The mechanism is positioned adjacent to a busbar in a second compartment of the electrical enclosure. In the case of a first arc fault occurring in the first compartment, an explosion occurs which results in a pressure wave. The pressure wave causes the mechanism to move into the second compartment and make electrical contact with the busbar, which causes a short and/or a second arc fault in the second compartment, thereby extinguishing the first arc fault in the first compartment.

Abstract: An electrical switching device and method are disclosed. The electrical switching device can include two movable contacts. During opening of the switching device, the two movable contacts move in a first direction until one of the movable contacts engages a blocking member. The other movable contact continues in the first direction, effecting opening of the switching device. In a particular implementation, the movable contact that engages the blocking member “bounces” in a second direction after contacting the blocking member. This causes the contacts of the switching device to be separated very quickly, reducing electrical arcing during opening of the switching device.

Abstract: An electrical switch includes a tubular housing that includes an interface positioned intermediate the conductor receiving end and the operating end. An operating rod extends through the housing. A fixed contact is electrically coupled to the operating end. A moveable contact is electrically coupled to the interface and the operating rod, wherein the moveable contact is moveable between a first position contacting the fixed contact and a second position separated from the fixed contact. A diaphragm is positioned in the tubular housing between the interface and the operating end and includes a first tubular portion and a second tubular portion. Movement of the operating rod from the first position to the second position causes the second tubular portion to move relative to the first tubular portion, thus deforming the shoulder portion.

  • Patent number: 8183490
Abstract: An improved circuit breaker having an improved shield apparatus provides protection to components that are internal to the circuit breaker during an arc event. A contact arm carrier assembly of the circuit breaker comprises a number of springs that bias a number of movable contacts that are disposed on contact arms into engagement and electrical connection with a stationary contact. The shield apparatus is disposed on a carrier housing of the contact arm carrier assembly and is situated adjacent the springs. A shield member of the shield apparatus is biased into engagement with the contact arms. When the circuit breaker is moved between the ON position and the OFF or TRIPPED positions, the shield of the shield apparatus moves between a retracted position and a deployed position, with the shield remaining in engagement with the contact arms and protecting the springs from damage in an arc event. In one embodiment, the shield member is formed of a material that generates gases when struck by an arc.
