Abstract: The invention is a photovoltaic-specific, DC load-break disconnect switch intended for applications where load-break capability is only required under abnormal operating conditions or in an emergency due to the catastrophic failure or other system components. Under normal operating conditions, the load will be switched off before a DC disconnect switch is opened. Under conditions where a load-break disconnect operation is required, an alternate path is automatically provided through a sacrificial fuse to divert current from opening contacts such that the fuse interrupts the current and not the contacts, thereby providing a substantially arcless load break. The current rating of the sacrificial fuse may be orders of magnitude less than the normal carry current. Equipment based on this invention will provide a one-time load break function that is renewable by the replacement of a fuse. The invention leverages the superior, cost-effective fault clearing capability of fuses in DC applications.

  • Patent number: 7589295
Abstract: Electrical switchgear, such as a circuit breaker, must in general provide good dielectric strength in open position in order to avoid discharge. To improve the dielectric strength capacitors are often arranged in parallel between the contacts of the switchgear. For very high voltage applications, for example >500 kV, two circuit breaker are connected in series for switching such high voltages, i.e. the total voltage to be switched needs to be shared equally by the two switches. Because of the required capacitance the capacitor and hence also the switchgear is large, especially of great diameter, and costly. The novel device provides for shields arranged in order to form additional capacitors C1?, C1?? and C2 between the shields and between a connector, connecting the two switches, and the enclosure. The resulting switchgear 1 has increased dielectric strength and the total voltage is substantially equally shared by the two switches in series.

  • Patent number: 7262362
Abstract: The high-voltage switching device used in one installation position and has metallic encapsulation (10) a switching gap (4) and a particle trap (1) for holding foreign body particles (2), and is characterized in that in the one installation position, the particle trap (1) is arranged vertically underneath the switching gap (4), in the one installation position, an isolator part (8) is provided, which has a surface (8a) aligned essentially horizontally and faces the interior of the high-voltage switching device, with a metallic wall (9), which is higher than the particle trap (1; 1?), being arranged between the isolator part (8) and the particle trap (1; 1?). The particle trap (1) has a viewing window (3). If the high-voltage switching device is a disconnector, this viewing window (3) may be identical to the viewing window (3) for visual access to the visible disconnecting gap (4) of the disconnector.

  • Patent number: 6573469
Abstract: A gas-insulated switchgear device. A casing is provided with a first connection terminal and a second connection terminal, an interruption unit, and a disconnection unit. The disconnection unit includes a first fixed contact connected to the second connection terminal. A second fixed contact is at ground potential. A third fixed contact is connected to the first connection terminal. A first moving contact can be coupled to the third fixed contact. A second moving contact can be coupled to at least one of the first and second fixed contacts, and is electrically connected to the interruption unit. The second moving contact is rigidly fixed to a rotating actuation element. At least one of the first and second fixed contacts lies on the rotation plane of the second moving contact. The interruption unit includes an interruption chamber having a rotating case with a stationary contact and a mobile contact. A longitudinal axis of the interruption chamber is aligned with the rotating actuation element.

  • Patent number: 6498315
Abstract: A high-voltage switching device is described having at least two series-connected vacuum switching chambers. The vacuum switching chambers, which are disposed in series, are configured differently with regard to their physical size and/or contact configuration, such as the contact diameters, a separation between the contacts, and contact types. At least one vacuum switching chamber of a first type is provided, and at least one vacuum switching chamber of a second type is provided. The vacuum switching chambers are selected in such a manner that re-ignitions and restrikes of a vacuum switching chamber of the first type are coped with by at least one other vacuum switching chamber of the second type. The opening of the contacts of the two vacuum switching chambers at different times is used as an additional method for operation of the high-voltage switching device.

  • Patent number: 6258592
Abstract: An electroporation system and method for directing high-voltage currents to a suspension of cells contained in a cuvette. A high-voltage switch controls the coupling of a charge control to a high-voltage capacitor and, additionally, controls the coupling of the high-voltage capacitor to the cuvette. A current diverter diverts current away from the sample whenever an arc condition commences or a low sample resistance is detected across the cuvette. The current diverter includes a current diverter switch, which is triggered when a sense resistor measures a second predetermined voltage indicative of an arc-over event (or a low sample resistance condition).

  • Patent number: 5629658
Abstract: Methods of arc suppression connecting a PTC material in parallel with a pair of contacts but in series with a second pair of contacts. The PTC material could be doped-BaTiO.sub.3 -ceramics, conductive polymer, or metallic PTC materials. The two pairs of contacts should be so mechanically associated that the second pair of contacts must be always opened right after the opening of the first pair. It is enough for some applications to connect one pair of contacts in parallel with a polyswitch or BaTiO.sub.3 -ceramics. For medium and high voltage circuit breakers, more than two pairs of contacts may be needed, and all these contacts should be opened sequentially during a circuit interruption. According to the methods, simple structured circuit breakers can be made to protect circuits from a short circuit, an overload and a ground fault. The circuit breaker invented here can provide an electronic alarm signal when a fault current occurs.

  • Patent number: 5484972
Abstract: A high-voltage switching device for gas-insulated switchgear has a gas-filled metal housing, a conducting path in the metal housing and at least two series-connected switching points with movable contact pieces which are actuated by a common drive mounted on the metal housing. The conducting path forms an angle with at least one of the switching points respectively arranged on each leg of the angle, the device thereby requiring less space in the case of both vertical and horizontal installation.
