  • Patent number: 9077161
Abstract: An electric power switch suitable as a capacitor, line and load switch for transmission and distribution voltages includes an external actuator controlled by current transformers (CTs) mounted on live tanks comprising insulators forming dielectric containers that house the contactors of the switch. The CTs are located on the outside of the insulators in the regions of the insulators overlying the internal contactors between the upper and lower high voltage line taps. The actuator and controller may also be located outside the dielectric container, as desired. This configuration minimizes the size of the dielectric container and removes the severe size constraint inherent in design conventional “live tank” switch designs, while also avoiding the need for separate line-mounted CTs. This design also avoids the need for a separate grounded “dead tank” to house the CTs, which are more conveniently located in the outside of the insulators.

  • Patent number: 6747232
Abstract: In a vacuum contactor, the armature is initially deflected from an armature rest position through an initial movement distance, and then through a driving movement distance to an armature operating position when a pull-in current is applied to a drive coil. An operating element is deflected from an element rest position to an element operating position by the armature only while the latter is passing through the driving movement distance. This makes it possible to achieve a good tripping characteristic of the vacuum contractor.

  • Patent number: 6486420
Abstract: Disconnector contact drive devices for switchgear for power supply and distribution are described, in particular for air-insulated medium-voltage switchgear, having movable pole units. In where in a first movement sequence, the disconnector contacts are separated from fixed mating contacts of the switchgear. In a second movement sequence, the pole units are displaceable to achieve the isolating distance, and the disconnect contacts are moved to disconnect them by force components acting in the x/y directions. The disconnector contact drive devices are equipped with linear guide shafts. The pole units contain pole box frames which are linearly movable along the guide shafts from an ON position stop to an OFF position stop due to the forces acting on the toggles. The toggles each have four pivot bearings.

  • Patent number: 6429394
Abstract: The power breaker is provided with at least one arcing chamber (2) which is filled with SF6 gas, is rotationally symmetrical, and extends along a longitudinal axis (3). The arcing chamber (2) has a power current path with a central contact pin (14), and has a separate rated current path provided with rated current contacts (11). The arcing chamber (2) is operated by a drive linkage (4) which moves the contact pin (14) and the rated current contacts (11). The drive linkage (4) is designed such that, at the start of the disconnection process, the contact pin (14) remains in a first dead point position until the rated current path is interrupted. The contact pin (14) can then be moved in the disconnection direction at a considerably higher speed than the rated current contacts (11). Toward the end of their disconnection travel, the rated current contacts (11) run into a second dead point position.

  • Patent number: 6316742
Abstract: An actuator mechanism that decreases the time needed to move the contacts of a circuit interrupter between a closed circuit position and an open circuit position to reduce the probability of the occurrence of restrikes. The actuator mechanism uses a toggle spring arrangement that uses a single spring to move the interrupter through both an opening stroke and a closing stroke. The interrupter is designed to connect to the circuit in parallel, so that the interrupter is not normally in the circuit when the circuit is closed. Because the interrupter is not normally in the circuit, it can be manufactured to less stringent standards than those that apply to electrical components that normally remain in the circuit. The interrupter is well adapted for use as a puffer-type interrupter in which the contacts of the interrupter are contained in an arc-extinguishing gas, such as sulphur-hexaflouride (SF6) gas to further reduce the probability of restrikes and to minimize the effect of occurring restrikes.
