  • Patent number: 8247741
Abstract: A system is provided for heating or cooling discrete, linearly conveyed substrates having a gap between a trailing edge of a first substrate and a leading edge of a following substrate in a conveyance direction. The system includes a chamber, and a conveyor operably configured within the chamber to move the substrates through at a conveyance rate. A plurality of individually controlled temperature control units, for example heating or cooling units, are disposed linearly within the chamber along the conveyance direction. A controller is in communication with the temperature control units and is configured to cycle output of the temperature control units from a steady-state temperature output as a function of the spatial position of the conveyed substrates within the chamber relative to the temperature control units so as to decrease temperature variances in the substrates caused by movement of the substrates through the chamber.

  • Patent number: 5847376
Abstract: The present invention relates to an oven for heating an essentially liquid medium, especially a reactive casting material, flowing through the oven. The oven has an inlet into a channel for the medium to be heated, in which channel there is arranged a separate pipe through which the medium to be heated flows and in which it is heated by electromagnetic radiation. Several heating units are arranged along the channel, each of which comprises an electromagnetic radiator containing a waveguide. The waveguides guide the radiation to the channel through which the medium flows and which couples the radiation into that channel. The heating units are substantially decoupled from one another by means of a decoupling diaphragm that is provided in the channel and is arranged between two adjacent heating units or radiators essentially at right angles to the direction of flow. The pipe through which the medium flows passes through a passage in the decoupling diaphragm, thus also constituting a support for the pipe.

  • Patent number: 5637249
Abstract: For economy of operation, as much as possible of the total length of a steel strip being rolled by a Steckel mill should be maintained at an acceptably high temperature. To this end, the trailing edge of the strip is drawn into the coiler furnace to the extent possible without losing driving control of the strip. This is enabled by providing within or in close proximity with the entrance/exit port of the coiler furnace a pair of preferably heated pinch rolls that drive the trailing edge of the strip (that has just completed a pass through the Steckel mill) into the coiler furnace as far as possible, leaving only a very short protruding portion of that trailing edge outside the coiler furnace. The strip may be left idle within the coiler furnace for as long a time as is required to bring the temperature of the wound strip up to a target operating temperature. Then the same pair of pinch rolls in or near the entrance/exit port of the coiler furnace drive the strip out of the furnace toward the Steckel mill.
