    Abstract: A surface modification process and apparatus for the electro-spark deposition (ESD) on a workpiece may include mounting a workpiece on a rotationally driven mounting. The contact surface of the workpiece is ESD coated. Ultrasonic vibration is applied to the deposition layer during its crystallization phase. The workpiece may be a resistance spot welding electrode. The apparatus may have a vibrating applicator, ESD power supply, integrated ultrasonic transducer assembly, a work station having a rotational drive and an ultrasonic generator. The ultrasonic generator is connected to the ultrasonic transducer. The ultrasonic transducer assembly and the rotating driving work bench unit are integrated in a single assembly. The workpiece seats on the ultrasonic transducer assembly. The deposition of a surface coating occurs during simultaneous application of electro-spark deposition and ultrasonic vibration.

EDM cutting of the polycrystalline diamond table is sometimes impractical or even impossible, particularly when the cobalt or other infiltrant or catalyst concentration within the polycrystalline diamond table is very low (e.g., in the case of a leached polycrystalline diamond table). As such, laser cutting provides a valuable alternative machining method that may be employed in various processes such as laser scribing, laser ablation, and laser lapping.

The cutter is made of a conductive material and a non-conductive abrasive material to maximize the amount of material removed from the workpiece. The coolant includes one or more additives to enhance the electrical discharge between the cutter and the workpiece. The cutter is moved relative to the workpiece to remove material from the workpiece at a predetermined depth of cut using an enhanced high-speed electro-erosion (HSEE) process in which both HSEE and abrasive machining processes are used. The workpiece may then be finish machined to a final shape of the titanium article, such as a dovetail of a turbine blade.

An energized EDM electrode is moved in a plane containing the central axis and about an electrode axis generally perpendicular to the plane toward the rotating workpiece to provide a spark gap between the shaped electrode tip and the body. At least portions of the undercut are then formed by the EDM electrode as the workpiece is rotated. Devices made according to the forming methods are described.
