Patent number: 6523724Abstract: The present inventors have discovered a new vent which can be used in a venting closure and particularly in venting closures for large heavy duty liquid detergent and other liquid laundry product containers. In one embodiment, the vent comprises a wall, a vent opening in the wall, and one or more spacers on the surface of a face of the wall. Most especially the spacers are protuberances, especially rounded protuberances. A liner is adhered to a portion of the surface of the face and spaced from the vent opening by the spacers. The liner is made of a material which permits air to pass through the vent hole, but preferably, the liner material does not permit liquids to pass through the vent hole. In an especially preferred embodiment, the liner is comprised of a tetrafluoroethylene polymer. In a most preferred embodiment the application is also directed to a venting closure.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 2000Date of Patent: February 25, 2003Assignee: Unilever Home & Personal Care USA, division of Conopco, Inc.Inventors: John Michael Paulovich, Edward John Giblin, Richard Chalmers, Corinne Saso

Patent number: 6419886Abstract: For use in medical trays the filtering flat material (2) has to be such that no micro-organisms can penetrate through it. In order to arrange such a filter (1) for achieving closure of a tray's partial surface including through openings which ensures sterility, a closed sealing line, which surrounds the through openings, is formed in the area of each flat partial surface having through openings, along which two tray parts to be assembled and including co-operating clamping surfaces enable clamping the seal (3) of the filter (1). By the elasticity of the seal (3) sufficiently good closure is ensured even by small clamping pressure and even with not precisely plane clamping surfaces. The bond of the seal (3) to the filtering flat material (2) has the additional advantage that the filter (1) can also be arranged at a lower surface by pressing its seal (3) into a corresponding groove and does not loosen due to gravity.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 2000Date of Patent: July 16, 2002Inventors: Harald Oberdorfer, Heinz Suter

Patent number: 6274209Abstract: A venting cap (1) has a cavity (7), at least one first passage (4) for fluids connecting the cavity (7) with the inside of the container, at least one second passage (5.1, 5.2, 5) for fluids connecting the cavity (7) with the outside of the container, and a liquid-absorbing mass (8) arranged within the cavity (7). The liquid-absorbing mass (8) acts, after absorption of liquid, as a selective filter prohibiting the passage of liquid, but permits the passage of gas. This ensures the foolproof selective permeation of gas but not of liquid. Venting properties remain unaltered even at extreme conditions of transportation and storage.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 1998Date of Patent: August 14, 2001Assignee: Argo AG Plastic PackagingInventors: Jannis Pagidas, Efstathios Koklas, Alexis Stassinopolous

Patent number: 6216603Abstract: A vented hatch coaming for a covered hopper car permits unloading without opening the hatch cover. The vented hatch includes an opening in the coaming for the passage of air. Preferably, a housing is positioned adjacent the ring opening to exclude contaminants and, where extraordinary sanitation is required, a filter element.Type: GrantFiled: February 29, 2000Date of Patent: April 17, 2001Assignee: Thrall Car Manufacturing CompanyInventor: Richard B. Patent number: 6196409Abstract: The present invention relates to a container, or a cap for a container for viscous liquid products. The container or the cap comprises a venting element. The venting element allows passage of gases between the interior and the exterior of the container when the pressure inside the container differs from the external ambient pressure. The container or cap further includes a control feature which controls the phase separation of the product splashed onto the membrane.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1997Date of Patent: March 6, 2001Assignee: The Procter & Gamble CompanyInventors: Kirk Wallace Lake, Neil John Rogers, Marcel Vandebroek, Bruno Van den Branden

Patent number: 6193088Abstract: A closure (20) for sealing a micro-organism container (50) is disclosed. The closure (20) includes a resilient seal (24) for sealing the container (50), a passageway (26) extending through the seal (24), or filter media (28) extending across the passageway (26) integrally molded to the seal (24) for allowing sterile gas exchange therethrough. A method of making a flask closure (20) is also disclosed. The method includes molding a sealing member (24) having a port (26) extending therethrough while simultaneously sealing a peripheral edge (31) of a filter media (28) within the passageway (26).Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 1999Date of Patent: February 27, 2001Inventors: Monty E. Patent number: 6145687Abstract: A medical instrument sterilization container (10) is provided which includes a port (18). A removable filter (32) is received within port (18) to enable sterilization of instruments placed within container (10). A removable plug (48) replaces filter (32) to enable container (10) to be used to transport instruments without leaking of fluids therefrom.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 1999Date of Patent: November 14, 2000Assignee: Johnson & Johnson Medical, Inc.Inventors: Robert L. Patent number: 6085930Abstract: A package for maintaining a modified atmosphere around contents being contained therein when stored in an ambient environment is set forth. The modified-atmosphere package includes a tray, a membrane, and a structural member. The tray has a base and side walls extending upwardly from the base. The side walls and the base define a cavity wherein the contents are disposed. A membrane is attached to a top portion of the side walls and encloses the cavity. The structural member is detachably connected to the top portion of the side walls and is disposed above the membrane to prevent the membrane from contacting an external structure which inhibits permeation through the membrane. The structural member also has at least one opening for exposing the membrane to the ambient environment. Stacking means at the base of the tray and the top of the structural member allow the modified-atmosphere packages to be easily stacked.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 1998Date of Patent: July 11, 2000Assignee: PACTIV CorporationInventor: Danny S.
