  • Patent number: 3964631
Abstract: A drinking receptacle provided with a generally cup like body and an enclosing cover removably coupled to the top portion and upper open end of the cup like body, the cover having a drinking opening near the peripheral rim thereof, and a finger operated valve adapted to open and close said drinking opening whereby the receptacle may contain hot or cold beverages therein and the valve prevents the spillage of said beverages at times when beverages are not being poured or drunk from said drinking opening. The finger operated valve having an actuator reciprocally mounted in the side of the cover and having wedge like actuator structure as well as a finger operating abutment adapted wedgingly to move an arm of said valve away from a lower side of said cover and for actuating a resilient finger on said arm to thereby move a poppet head portion of said valve away from said opening for allowing contents to be poured through said opening and drunk at the rim of said cover.

The novel closure comprising a generally resilient central face having an aperture therethrough defined by overlapping edges, and a skirt extending from the periphery of the central face, said skirt having an integral engaging means formed as the inner face of the skirt for seating engagement with a rim portion of a container, said means including a skirt bead, said bead being formed into two connecting sections, one section being disposed in one plane and the other section being disposed in a second plane, said planes intersecting at an acute angle. The function of said two connecting sections in combination with the other recited features herein is to present a constant tensioning action for suitable sealing engagement of the edges of the aperture when loaded or affixed to the rim of the container or cup.

  • Patent number: 3938695
Abstract: A closure lid for capping the open top of a container. The container is of a type adapted to receive a potable liquid, usually one which is dispensed within a relatively close distance of the point at which it will be imbibed. Such containers with the closure lids emplaced thereon are used for "carry-out" services, as from a luncheonette, or for "carry-about" services, as from an on-the-premises beverage source such as a coffee brewer, a milk container, a carbonated or non-carbonated liquid vessel or a supply of hot water for tea or chocolate. It is customary to cap such containers with closure lids for carry-out purposes and to remove the lids when the potable is to be consumed; indeed it is quite usual to supply lids with the containers -- although not attached -- when the containers are sold to carry-out stores and to on-the-premises facilities where there are a large number of persons.
