The invention also relates to a package for the thin objects. With the aid of a pick up and lay down head on an application means a vacuum is applied on a part, preferably the middle, of the uppermost object in a stack of thin objects being in a recess of a package. The recess of the package for receiving the objects is at least areawise somewhat smaller than the exterior dimensions of the objects. With the aid of vacuum in the pick up and lay down head the uppermost object is lifted out of the package. The underlying objects in the stack remain in the package by the friction and scrape effects towards the interior walls of the package. Then the pick up and lay down head of the application means is lowered down so that the object is brought into contact with the surface.

Abstract: A device for dispensing folded sheets of material, such as a paper napkin, provides a selected time interval between successive dispensing operations in order to limit the overall rate at which the product is dispensed. The device uses a reciprocatable vacuum head for picking a napkin from a supply stack controlled to have an uppermost article at a selected height, and for then delivering the napkin to a delivery chute. The dimensions of the device can be matched the size of the napkin so that the vacuum head travels high that even if the napkin partially unfolds, it does not contact any portion of the device that could soil it or that it could jam. The vacuum head may be driven by a swing-arm linkage coupled to a crank turned by an electric gearmotor once per delivery cycle.

Abstract: An article handling apparatus embodied, for example, as a vending machine, includes a controllably positioned hose dispenser for retrieving articles from an article storage area. A hose is continuous from a first end located within a hose storage area, where the hose receives article securing energy (e.g., suction), to a second end adapted to secure to and extract a selected article from the storage area. A hose positioning mechanism coupled to the hose controllably positions the second end of the hose so as to be aligned with a given article stored in the storage area, for controllably contacting and extracting the selected article from the storage area, and controllably positioning the second end of the hose so as to transport the article to a dispensing area. The hose positioning mechanism imparts both a storage requirement and a retraction requirement on the hose as a result of the controllable positioning.

Abstract: A vacuum seed planter uses a single seed plate for planting multiple plots of seeds. The seed plate rotates through a seed chamber and uses vacuum pressure to pick up seeds to be planted, the seed chamber having an inlet passage for receiving seeds. A singulator dislodges excess seeds from the seed plate, and the excess seeds fall into an excess-seed compartment adjacent the seed chamber, the compartment having an outlet passage for evacuation of the excess seeds. A valve is movable between an operating position, in which the inlet passage communicates with a supply of seed and the outlet passage communicates with a vacuum source for evacuating excess seeds, and an evacuation position, in which the vacuum source is in communication with the inlet passage for evacuating the seeds in the seed chamber. Vacuum pressure on the seed plate can be maintained during evacuation of the seed chamber and excess-seed compartment.

Abstract: Seeding apparatus has an opener mounted on the main frame in such a manner that the driven sprocket of a seed metering device on the opener moves slightly toward and away from the axis of the drive sprocket on the main frame as the opener moves up and down relative to the frame during changes in ground contour. To prevent the driving tight stretch of the drive chain between the drive sprocket and driven sprocket from undergoing significant length change during such movement of the opener relative to the frame, the tight stretch is trained around intermediate guide structure in such a manner that the different portions of the tight stretch thus defined all stay substantially constant in length at all times. An arrangement for use with a parallel linkage mounting of the opener has guides on the main frame and the opener that keep the chain portion spanning the frame and opener substantially parallel to the links of the linkage and of substantially the same length as such links.
