Patent number: 5400925Abstract: A device for dispensing a predetermined amount of fluid material from chambers within a cartridge. This device includes a housing, a trigger pivotably connected to the housing and a plunger having teeth on a top side thereof entering the housing and passing through an upper part of the trigger. A ratchet is attached to the upper part of the trigger and engaged between the plunger teeth. When force is applied to the trigger, the ratchet is pushed forward, causing the plunger to also move forward, dispensing the contents of each of the chambers within the cartridge. When the trigger is released, the ratchet moves backward causing the plunger to move with the ratchet. The plunger moves backward a short distance until the force applied by the ratchet is overcome through frictional engagement between the plunger and a frictional brake mounted on the housing, at that point the ratchet slides over the next tooth behind it on top of the plunger.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 1993Date of Patent: March 28, 1995Assignee: Coltene/Whaledent, Inc.Inventor: Christian Simmen

Patent number: 5392956Abstract: A method for the advance of two or more rods against a resistance, as it is typically required in dispensing appliances for multiple component dispensing cartridges, consists in that thrust rods are seized by clamping levers in a traveller and then are advanced along with the traveller. The thrust rods extend through guides in traveller on both sides of the respective clamping lever as well as through a bore in the clamping lever. By a transmission of the advancing motion to the clamping levers, which is offset with respect to the bore, the latter are pivoted perpendicularly to the bore, whereby the thrust rods are clamped in the bores and are driven along. The clamping levers are arranged in such a manner that the torsional moments of the clamping action are essentially equal and opposed, whereby no torsional moment acts upon the traveller as a whole.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 1993Date of Patent: February 28, 1995Inventor: Wilhelm A. Patent number: 5224628Abstract: The dispensing apparatus is used with twin cartridges that have two axially parallel storage cylinders and a nozzle piece connecting them. The apparatus has two plungers, one for each storage cylinder, guided to move longitudinally, and a holder for interchangeable cartridges which has a guide for the nozzle piece of a cartridge. To allow the use of two different types of cartridges, with cylinders of different diameter ratios, the holder is provided with a retention device designed to align the axes of the storage cylinders with those of the plungers; the retention device has separate grippers associated with each plunger, and these are dimensioned for different cylinder diameters. Different cartridges can be aligned between one of the grippers and the cylinder it grips, in conjunction with the guide for the nozzle piece, while the other gripper leaves the other cylinder free.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 1991Date of Patent: July 6, 1993Inventor: Wilhelm A. Patent number: 5217146Abstract: It is often necessary to manufacture casting masses out of several components which must be homogeneously mixed in a specific ratio. It can thereby happen that such casting masses harden so quickly that they must be processed in the shortest time possible in order not to react with one another or harden already in the mixing area or in the pipelines and thus result in the possible destruction of the device. The components are in the arrangement of the invention each moved by a pump out of the respective storage tanks into a synchronous dosing mechanism which consists of a dosing chamber for each component, from where the respective now dosed amount of each component is moved with the help of a dosing piston into a flow mixer, with the dosing pistons being thereby mechanically connected and operated by a common drive, and the flow mixer moving the now ready casting mass directly into a mold. The mixing ratios can in this manner be well maintained.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 1992Date of Patent: June 8, 1993Assignee: Wilhelm Hedrich Vakumanlagen GmbH & Co. Patent number: 5209376Abstract: A finger actuated dispenser for a multi-component reactant toothpaste, or other fluent materials. The dispenser preferably comprises at least two coaxial cylindrical product reservoirs wherein the uppermost end of each product reservoir communicates with the other reservoirs through generally coaxial nozzles. The lowermost end of each reservoir is equipped with a concentric piston connected rearward of its leading face to the rearward portions of the other pistons by a plurality of radially oriented spokes having knife edges on their forwardmost surfaces. The knife edges taper outwardly at an acute angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the reservoirs from the interior of the innermost reservoir toward the outermost reservoir, thereby outwardly expanding the innermost surface of the innermost reservoir wall as the pistons and knife edges are advanced upwardly relative to the product reservoirs.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 1992Date of Patent: May 11, 1993Assignee: The Procter & Gamble CompanyInventor: Robert S. Patent number: 5207357Abstract: In the epoxy ejection gun disclosed herein, a bridge member which couples and drives a pair of push rods includes a forward facing seat or socket, e.g. of conical shape. A lead nut engageable with a rotatable lead screw is provided with a surface matching the seat. An adjustable spring is provided for biasing the interfitting parts. Rotation of the lead screw causes the lead nut to advance driving the push rods but pressure is controlled by the selected value of biasing force on the matching surfaces, excessive force allowing the lead nut to rotate with the lead screw rather than to advance.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 1992Date of Patent: May 4, 1993Assignee: Quikpoint, Inc.Inventors: Alan B. Patent number: 5184758Abstract: The dispensing appliance customarily built in "pistol form" for double cartridges with plunger has a pressure medium-driven cylinder/piston unit with rams extending from the piston for the forward drive of the plungers. The problem here consists in that during the piston forward thrust the reaction forces from the plungers acting upon the two rams can be very different (different viscosities of the substances contained in the two cartridge cylinders and/or different cross-sections of the cartridge cylinders). In order to prevent "tilting" or jamming of the piston, the invention provides in the cylinder space a rigid longitudinal guide between both cylinder floors against which the piston is slidingly supported with a longitudinally extended guide bore. The longitudinal guide can simultaneously reinforce the cylinder and further lead the pressure medium into the pressure chamber behind the piston by way of a longitudinal channel.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 1990Date of Patent: February 9, 1993Inventor: Wilhelm A. Patent number: 5181629Abstract: A dispenser for dispensing two components is disclosed which comprises a drum 10 in which a tube 20 is supported. A first piston 12 is arranged within the drum 10 and has an opening 22 through which the tube 20 extends. The opening is provided with a plug 80 which has an aperture also through which the tube 20 extends. The plug supports a blade 32 which bears on a second piston 40 arranged within the tube 22. The plug 80 is fixed relative to the piston 12 so that it and the blade 32 move with the piston 12. During movement of the piston 12 the blade 32 slices the tube 20 and bears against the second piston 40 so that the first piston 12 and the second piston 40 move in a fixed manner as a single unit. During movement of the pistons 12 and 40 the two components are dispensed from the drum 10 and the tube 22 in a particular ratio depended upon the volume displaced by movement of the pistons 12 and 40. The dispensed components can therefore be mixed together in the predetermined ratios.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 1991Date of Patent: January 26, 1993Inventors: James O. Camm, Stephen J. Camm

Patent number: RE34487Abstract: In dispensing apparatus for operating double cartridges with holding flange, a front-face retaining guide with slide-in opening on one side for the holding flange is provided. The problem arises of ensuring effective anchoring between apparatus and cartridge in order to prevent deformations of the holding flange or of the entire cartridge when, for dispensing the cartridge content, the two dispensing plungers of the apparatus are moved out of the apparatus front and push delivery pistons forward which are inserted into the cartridge cylinders. For this purpose, the retaining guide is continuous on both sides of a straight line which connects the centers of both plungers. The slide-in opening extends transversely to the mentioned straight line. Due to this arrangement, the holding flange is rigidly held in the retaining guide, i.e. each of the cartridge cylinders is anchored via the flange at two diametrically opposed locations.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 1992Date of Patent: December 28, 1993Inventor: Wilhelm A.
