  • Patent number: 6945287
Abstract: A backflow blocker prevents backflow of gas to a lower pressure first stage of a system for processing particles from a downstream higher pressure second stage of the system. The blocker comprises an upright duct connecting the first stage to the second stage. The duct is at least partly filled with a column of particles passing from the first stage to the second stage. By properly selecting the duct dimensions and by controlling the flow rate of particles into and from the duct, the velocity of downwardly moving particles in the duct can be made to exceed the velocity at which the gasses flow through the particles in the duct. This prevents gasses from flowing from the lower pressure downstream stage to the higher pressure upstream stage.

A second screw type rotary member extends along the radial direction parallel to the second blade and is rotated for moving material toward the supporting member. A third blade is upstanding in the container.

Abstract: In a feeder assembly for highly viscous particulate material, a hopper is provided with two pairs of counterrotating agitators, one pair being disposed above the other. Each agitator is provided with a plurality of blades or paddles located in planes extending radially and longitudinally relative to the respective axis of rotation. Each blade or paddle in turn comprises a plurality of transverse rods equispaced from each other in the longitudinal direction of the respective agitator, as well as a longitudinally extending rod connected to the outer ends of the transverse rods. The agitators are driven so that the portions thereof at the nips of the respective agitator pairs move upwardly away from the outlet of the hopper.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a vibrating screen agitator in a coal storage hopper for assuring the uniform feed of coal having sufficient moisture content to effect agglomeration and bridging thereof in the coal hopper from the latter onto a conveyor mechanism. The vibrating screen agitator is provided by a plurality of transversely oriented and vertically spaced apart screens in the storage hopper with a plurality of vertically oriented rods attached to the screens. The rods are vibrated to effect the vibration of the screens and the breaking up of agglomerates in the coal which might impede the uniform flow of the coal from the hopper onto a conveyer.

  • Patent number: 4392591
Abstract: A multistage volumetric feeder has a storage hopper for storing a mass of semi-flowable material, such as strand fiberglass, asbestos, or titanium dioxide. The material is bottom unloaded and passed through several stages of pressure reduction, aeration, and conditioning to loosen the material and place it in a state of substantially constant density. The conditioned material is further prevented from bridging and compacting as it is volumetrically delivered to a metering stage through a segregation stage. Because the semi-flowable material is placed in an uncompacted state of substantially constant density, the feeder is capable of delivering a precise mass of material over a wide range of flow rates.

  • Patent number: 4363428
Abstract: When poultry or other livestock feed is stored within a bin having a conical bottom, the feed can become packed and bridge across the bin bottom opening. Under such circumstances, delivery of feed to an underlying conveyor may be erratic under some conditions. To overcome this, the present invention provides a first rotatable shaft extending upwardly along the axis of the bin bottom cone. A second shaft is joined to the first shaft by a universal joint. Mounted on the second shaft are a number of poly-sided discs. Here, these discs are equilateral triangles, and the triangle corners or points are bent out of the plane of the mediate disc portions. Arrangements are provided for locking the discs to the second shaft. If desired, a feed support disc can be carried by the first shaft below the second shaft so as to at least temporarily support feed which has been dislodged by the rotating poly-sided discs above it.

  • Patent number: 3981417
Abstract: A mass of particulate material stored in a hopper is bottom unloaded and passed through several stages of aeration and fluidization to condition the material and place it in a relatively uncompacted state. The material is conditioned with a minimum of vibration of the material mass so that the mass remains a homogeneous mixture of densities and does not stratify into powdery and coarse materials. The conditioned material is fed to a distributor ring wherein it is further aerated and fluidized into an uncompacted state and moved in a uniform volumetric flow through an annular array of holes into a pneumatic conveyor. Because the material is placed in an uncompacted state while being maintained as a homogeneous mixture of densities, a very precise mass of material may be metered out as a linear function of the time of delivery. With the present system, preselected masses of material can be delivered with extremely high accuracy.
