Abstract: A multiflavor beverage dispenser comprises a microprocessor system for controlling the ratio of diluent to concentrate of a post-mix beverage. The system includes a compact flow rate control module for selectively controlling the flow rates of liquids in a plurality of flow passages leading to nozzle assemblies of the dispenser. Each flow rate control module includes a single stepper motor connected to a rotary spool valve for selectively controlling the flow rate of the liquids. The microprocessor system utilizes variable reference signals which are ramped to approximately correspond to the actual flow rate of the liquid towards a target in order to reduce overshoot values of the flow rates. A scaling function is provided by the microprocessor system to adjust target flow rates between pours in order to achieve consistent controlled ratios of the beverage being dispensed.

  • Patent number: 4976377
Abstract: A liquid or powder measurement apparatus, usable also for mixing a plurality of measured materials and for distributing the mixture to a plurality of dispensing containers. A flow control valve having a wide flow rate range and excellent linearity between the degree of valve opening and flow rate is disposed in each of the liquid flow paths and is adjustable to have a flow rate linearly varying with the stroke of the valve. A mixing container receives the raw material from one or more supply containers and is weighed by a load cell to thereby detect the amount of material flowing into or out of the mixing container. A control unit operating according to fuzzy logic compares the measured weight with a target weight and accordingly adjusts the flow rate of a selected one of the flow regulators. The same load cell and control unit can also control the flows from the mixing containers to the dispensing containers.

  • Patent number: 4972971
Abstract: An inflator for automatically inflating an inflatable article, such as a personal flotation vest, upon immersion in water. A plunger is movably mounted within a housing and is movable with respect to a pressurized gas canister attached to the housing. An internally resettable automatic actuator mechanism, mounted within the housing, acts on the plunger to move the plunger to pierce the canister to release the pressurized gas therefrom through the housing to the inflatable article attached to the housing. A pair of spaced water sensor probes mounted in the housing provide a signal to a control device indicating that the housing is immersed in water. The control device activates the automatic actuator mechanism to release a spring-biased ram from a latched position such that the ram engages and urges the plunger under force into the sealed end of the gas canister.

  • Patent number: 4964533
Abstract: To control with precision and repeatability the amount of fluid dispensed or aspirated by a pumping system, a volume disk rotates with the output shaft of a DC motor that drives a reciprocating dispensing pump. A sensor detects indicia on the disk and provides periodic signals spaced-apart in time by an amount: (1) an amount proportional to the volume of fluid pumped; (2) proportional to the angle between indicia; (3) less than one-third of the length of the total stroke of the piston as the piston moves linearly in its working portion of a cycle; (4) necessary for the piston to sweep out a volume of less than five milliliters. The speed of the pump is controlled by a second disk having equally spaced indicia that are sensed to provide signals proportional to the motor speed. During dispensing or aspirating large volumes, the motor speed is increased to a high speed, run at the high speed and then decreased before stopping and during dispensing smaller volumes, it is maintained at a constant lower speed.

The solenoid valves have movable stop (or push rods) that control the travel of the armature, which in turn controls the position of a needle valve with respect to the valve seat to gradually change the flow opening and thus the syrup and water flow rates. A microprocessor uses the movable stop to adjust the syrup and/or water flow rate to deliver the proper ratio of syrup to water based on the flow of water and syrup as measured by flow meters. In addition, the total flow rate from the nozzle can be controlled and varied in relation to the distance the cup lever arm is depressed; thus, the flow rate can be made slow at the beginning and end, and fast in-between.

  • Patent number: 4850805
Abstract: A pump control system is described in which the pumping mechanism causes corresponding movement of a pair of capacitor plates. The plates are energized by an a.c. signal, and the signal produced by the plates is amplitude detected, with the amplitude modulation representing pumping force. The pumping force is converted to pumping pressure. The pumping pressure peak during pumping and the pressure minimum during filling are detected to determine the portion of a pumping cycle required to make the transition between these two pressure levels. The difference between the two pressure levels divided by the transition portion of the pumping cycle gives a measure of the compliance of the pump chamber. The ratio of the compliance measure to the total cycle, when multiplied by the nominal chamber volume, gives a measure of unpumped volume, which is subtracted from the nominal volume to give the volume actually pumped during a pump cycle.

Abstract: When a weigh feeding system which senses the rate of material feed by weighing the material and automatically controls the actual feed on the basis of a departure of the sensed rate of material feed from a desired rate, thereby to produce an error signal, is subjected to a major or sporadic disturbance such that the sensed rate departs from the desired feed rate by more than a predetermined amount, the system limits the feed rate used to produce the error signal to a synthetic amount no matter by how far the sensed feed rate departs from the desired rate, the values of said predetermined amount and said synthetic amount being selected in accordance with the nature of the system, the degree of accuracy desired, and the nature of the expected disturbances, thereby to improve the overall accuracy of the system when subjected to such disturbances.

Abstract: A system for delivering a drug to a patient according to the preferred embodiment of the present invention is shown as including a plunger assembly reciprocally received in a reservoir for forcing the drug therefrom for delivery to the patient. The plunger assembly is axially advanced by the rotation of a lead screw rotatably mounted and axially movable with respect to the chassis. In a first axial position, the end of the lead screw deflects contacts of a switch member into electrical engagement which interrupts operation of the motor which rotates the lead screw. The lead screw is biased out of its first axial position such that the first end of the lead screw does not actuate the switch member and rotation of the lead screw is not interrupted.

Abstract: A fluid infusion positive displacement pump includes a plunger driven by a stepping motor which is operated by a motor control system. The control system advances the plunger to expel liquid in a series of incremental steps at a user-set pumping rate and until a preset total dosage has been delivered with the pumping rate being determined by the waiting time between each step. In order to minimize shock to the patient, the pump is operated at a plurality of increasing fractional rates during the start of pumping and at a plurality of decreasing fractional rates at the termination of pumping with the user-set (maximum) pumping rate occurring between such fractional rate pumping periods.

  • Patent number: 4700870
Abstract: An apparatus for dispending a fluid free of included air bubbles, such as for example, an adhesive bead, includes sensing devices for detecting the presence of an included air bubble in the conduit leading from a source of the fluid to a discharge of a movable fluid dispenser. The sensing devices are connected to a motor which drives an arm on which the fluid dispenser is mounted. A first sensing device slows movement of the dispenser upon sensing an air bubble in the fluid and a second sensing device stops movement of the dispenser upon sensing an air bubble in the fluid. The movement of the dispenser is restarted after a predetermined time period sufficient to allow the air bubble to pass out of the dispenser discharge. The sensing devices advantageously use a light beam, such as infra-red light or laser, to detect the presence of the included air bubble.
