  • Patent number: 4293086
Abstract: This apparatus separates downturned flaps of paperboard cases, which flaps are joined by tabs and lying over sides of the case, without requiring the use of a knife or other sharp instrument for cutting. The apparatus has a conveyor for moving the case through the apparatus. There is a first device for engaging one of the flaps. A first thrust device is positioned proximate to the conveyor and connected to the flap engaging device for moving it against the side of the case over which the one of the flaps lies, and below the flap. There is a device operatively coupled to the flap engaging device for moving it along the side of the case until at least a portion of the flap engaging device extends between the flap and the side against which it lies. A device for retracting the flap engaging device is connected thereto and does so with sufficient force to break the tab joining the flap to another one of the flaps of the case. The flap engaging device is preferably frustum shaped.

  • Patent number: 4235357
Abstract: A machine and method for subdividing into individual substrates a wafer which is prescored with a pattern of intersecting score lines defining the substrates. The wafer is progressively directed over a first wafer-engaging surface substantially paralleling one set of score lines, and this surface cooperates during a breaking operation to impart a localized force at a score line in the set. The wafer is halted during the breaking operation, after which the broken-off portion is directed over a second wafer-engaging surface substantially paralleling the other set of score lines. This second surface cooperates, during a substrate breaking operation, to apply a localized force adjacent a score line of the other set. The broken-off portion is halted during this latter breaking operation at which a substrate is separated from the broken-off portion of the wafer.

  • Patent number: 4151940
Abstract: Apparatus for automatically loosening the marginal strip from a sheet of contour-cut glass with a minimum of edge defects comprises, in substance, a horizontal conveyor; a tracing assembly of cutting tools disposed above the conveyor for marking off auxiliary cutouts subdividing the marginal strip; and separation means comprising pressing tools for pressing the sheet in such a manner as to apply a bending moment along the auxiliary cutouts. The pressing tools are arranged opposite the margins both on their upper face and their lower face, and they bear on either side of the auxiliary cutout lines in order to exert bending moments along each. As a consequence, the apparatus generates a progressive breaking stress whereby separation of the margins is effected starting from an area external of the actual contour cutout line before spreading along the contour. The result is a particularly clear-cut edge.

  • Patent number: 4108343
Abstract: In a method of and apparatus for breaking away of prepunched pieces from a curved or arched sheet of material, the sheet is applied to a block, and the pieces of material to be broken away are individually engaged between a pointed component acting on the upper surface of the sheet and a counter pressure mounting support acting on the lower surface of the sheet. Said pointed component on downward movement penetrates said upper surface only to the extent necessary to prevent relative lateral movement between the two, and said counterpressure mounting support supports oppositely disposed edge portions of the piece of material to be broken away, continuing downward movement of said pointed component causing said piece of material to bend under load to the extent that it loses its holds on said edge portions and is pushed through said mounting support to be released from said pointed component on leaving said mounting support.

  • Patent number: 4044937
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for breaking apart, pre-scribed chips in a semiconductor wafer. The apparatus comprises a plurality of ball elements having a diameter substantially smaller than the diameter of the wafer, mounted in a support beneath the contacting plane. Located above and in spaced coaxial relationship with the ball elements is a plurality of purging gas/vacuum ports. The pre-scribed semiconductor wafer is mounted on an elastic film by means of an adhesive coating thereon. The wafer, so mounted, is attached to a sliding carriage disposed so as to permit the wafer to freely move within said contacting plane. When the wafer is disposed in said contacting plane, the support for said ball element is raised into contact with the wafer. The relatively small radius of curvature of the ball elements induces a relatively large bending moment and consequently breaks the chip in the wafer along the pre-scribed lines.

Abstract: The pre-grooved plates e.g. of chewing gum are advanced over a stationary breaker edge into the path of a rotating, polygonal (preferably triangular) breaker shaft whose apices form breaker edges which rotate past the stationary breaker edge. Each facet of the shaft is provided with a stop positioned to be engaged by the leading edge of the advancing plate. The distance across a facet from the respective stop to the respective rotating breaker edge is equal to the width of a strip to be broken from the plate at the next groove in the plate. The axis of rotation of the breaker shaft is transversally displaced from the level of the plate, by an amount sufficient to provide the rotating breaker edge, at the site where the breaking occurs, a velocity component in the direction of advance of the plate which approximately matches the velocity of advance of the plate. Accordingly, the advance and rotary breaking may proceed continuously.

  • Patent number: 3964655
Abstract: A pair of endless moving link chains have respective spans which are disposed in opposed relationship and driven in the same direction. One of the pair of the link chains carries thereon outwardly projecting blank holding pins at intervals along the length of the chain, while the other link chain carries thereon outwardly projecting sheet product pushing out pins. The spans of the link chains are disposed in converging relationship with respect to the moving direction of the spans. A blank comprising at least one sheet having cut lines defining a sheet product is supplied into the space between the spans at the upstream end of the space with respect to the moving direction. As the blank is conveyed between the spans the sheet product pushing out pins move transversely relative to and toward the blank holding pins because of the convergence of the spans and finally push out the sheet product from the remaining part of the blank which is being held by the blank holding pins.
