    Abstract: A web-tensioning apparatus has stationary and movable clamps for clamping the opposite ends of a length of web, the movable clamp having a first spring for elastically forcing it in a direction towards the length and a second spring for elastically forcing it in a direction away from the length, the second spring providing greater spring force than the first spring plus the clamped length's initial resistance to stretching. If the web does stretch a little, the first spring relaxes so that the second spring can exert more force to move the movable clamp away from the stretched length.

    Abstract: The accurate and uniform indexing of paper business forms with line hole punched margins. The index drive overcomes any possible accumulation of errors. A pawl and ratchet device is employed in the feeding of the paper form. The ratchet is rotated approximately one-half tooth beyond the ultimate desired stop. A spring urged arm then pulls the ratchet wheel back that one-half tooth turn so the pawl rests solidly in a single ratchet tooth. It is this same spring arm that pulls back the over-fed paper form. The form pull back is permitted by reason of a magnetic one-way clutch being momentarily released at the end of the mechanical feed-out. The present device is a combination of a mechanical drive with a magnetically releasable clutch to effect a constantly accurate feed out of paper forms resulting in identical positioning of each of the series of continuous paper forms.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for removing the coil set from a coiled roll of sheet metal material or the like, and which comprises a pair of cooperating rolls defining a nip through which the sheet metal is advanced, and a deflecting roll positioned immediately downstream of the nip to flex the advancing sheet material beyond its yield point and remove the coil set therefrom. Upon stopping of the advance to permit the cutting or other processing of the sheet material, the deflecting roll is automatically withdrawn from contact with the sheet material to thereby prevent the formation of a crease in the material, and upon restarting of the advance, the sheet material is initially reversely advanced a short distance to insure that any portion of the sheet material which has not been flexed to remove the coil set will be positioned upstream of the nip before the forward advance is commenced.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus for use in a web transport system wherein the web is stopped at a position it occupied when an event occurs. In particular, a motor driven capstan is provided to drive a web, such as a filmstrip, between first and second reels. A tachometer, operatively coupled to the capstan motor, provides a first signal representing the actual film velocity. The first signal is applied to an integrator which is controlled in a manner whereby during normal operation of the web transport system the integrator is off and does not affect system performance. When the event occurs requesting the capstan drive motor to stop, the integrator is enabled and provides an output which is proportional to the distance traveled during deceleration of the capstan drive motor (overshoot). The output of the integrator is coupled to first summing junction whereat it is added to a signal representing the desired film velocity which is driven to zero upon occurrence of the event.

    Abstract: This application discloses an apparatus for preventing heat damage to thermoplastic web material being converted to produce bags. After a selected number of bags have been made, the web feeding rolls are automatically stopped for a short period, which may be for one or more machine cycles or stopped for an indeterminate period on command of the operator, to allow removal or transfer of a completed stack of bags. When web movement is stopped, the web feeding rolls that are driven by a belt, are rotated in a direction opposite to the feed direction to withdraw the leading edge of the web from the plane in which the heated seal bar reciprocates. Withdrawing of the web occurs by applying additional tension to that reach of the belt which will effect reverse rotation of the feeding rolls. Such additional tension is created by freely rotating pulleys mounted on a plate oscillated by an actuator.

    Abstract: A hitch feed assembly for automatically aligning individual lead frames at a bonding site in both the longitudinal and lateral directions is disclosed. The alignment is attained as a result of the cooperation between a plurality of chamfered pawls and the sprocket holes in the film-carrier. The pawls are chamfered along three sides in order to attain alignment in both the longitudinal and lateral directions. Significantly, the pawls come into operational contact with the sprocket holes while the lead frame film-carrier is under minimal tension so that the pressure exerted on the edges of the sprocket holes by the pawls will be minimal, thereby avoiding any deformation in the shape of the sprocket holes.

During the feeding of the record member to the printing station, the gear segments are positioned in tandem to move the record member a predetermined length while in a feed-out operation, the segments are positioned in an overlap condition to move the record member a distance which is one print line less than the feed-in movement.

    Abstract: Automatic registration of the web of sheet material on a printing cylinder is effected in a silk screen printing apparatus which includes a printing frame reciprocably movable in an impressing and return cycle. Web guide rollers are arranged to direct the web to and from said printing cylinder. A first drive arrangement, including a first motor, is connected both to drive the printing frame reciprocably and said printing cylinder unidirectionally in the impression-receiving direction. The printing cylinder is disengaged from the first drive during the reverse travel of the printing frame so that the web is stationary. A second drive arrangement is provided, including a second motor, connected to drive the printing cylinder in a second direction, that is the reverse of the printing direction.
