Abstract: A self-compensating tensioner, particularly a self-compensating tensioner for use in a folder of a web offset printing press, includes a plurality of rollers designed to tension tapes. Each roller is mounted on a tensioner arm. The tensioner arms are mounted on a rotatable shaft via one-way clutches with a weight attached to each tensioner arm so that the center of mass of the tensioner arm is offset from the rotatable shaft. The force of gravity may therefore rotate the tensioner arm about the shaft, applying a minimum tension to the tape through the roller. A lever arm is connected to the shaft through an engagement clutch, with an actuator connected to the lever arm. When the actuator and the engagement clutch are activated, the lever arm can apply a torque to the tensioner arms through the shaft, thereby increasing the tension in the tapes to a working level.

For this purpose, it contains a friction drive (8) comprising friction rollers, between which the recording substrate (A) is passed through, and a paper feed device (PZ). In the paper feed device (PZ), the recording substrate (A) is aligned in a web precentering device (3), is thereafter braked in the recording substrate transport direction, so that the recording substrate (A) assumes a predetermined position in the friction drive (8). After that, the recording substrate web is stabilized in a stabilization zone by stabilization rollers (9) and is fed via a festoon device (10) to the drive (8) of the printing unit (DA).

Abstract: A dispenser for dispensing tape, particularly a ribbon of tape, from a roll uses guide and feed rollers to define the path of the ribbon, at least sufficient of these rollers are shaped to apply a significantly higher unit tension to the ribbon along a central longitudinal portion of the ribbon than is applied along the longitudinal side edge portions of the ribbon on opposite sides of the longitudinal central portion so that forces tending to tear the tape adjacent to the side edges of the tape are significantly less than the forces in the center whereby breakage of the tape is minimized.

  • Patent number: 5659229
Abstract: This invention pertains to processing continuous webs such as paper, film, composites, and the like, in dynamic continuous processing operations. More particularly, it relates to controlling tension in such continuous webs during the processing operation. Tension is controlled in a dancer control system by connecting a corresponding dancer roll to a servo motor or the like, sensing position, tension, and velocity parameters related to the web and the dancer roll, and providing active gain force commands to cause translational movement in the dancer roll to control temporary, short-term tension disturbances in the web. In some applications of the invention, the dancer control system is used to attenuate short-term tension disturbances. In other applications of the invention, the dancer control system is used to create short-term tension disturbances.

  • Patent number: 5543980
Abstract: A tape loading device for use in a recording or reproducing apparatus has a first turning member having a tape guide which is kept in contact with a tape during running thereof and being turnable according to the tension of the tape, a second turning member for causing the first turning member to turn by its turning operation and loading the tape guide into a predetermined position, and a driving part for turning the second turning member. An urging member having two end portions is provided on the second turning member with the two end portions supported individually. The urging member is arranged so that only when the first turning member is located within a predetermined turning range, one of the two end portions is brought into engagement with an engagement part fixed to the driving part so that the urging member can generate an urging force for the first turning member.

Abstract: A device for improving a system for controlling the winding of a ribbon on a take-up reel. This device is particularly designed to obviate the phenomenon of clinging between a ribbon and the face of a card to be printed on, during an operation of printing by the thermal transfer of inks carried by the ribbon. For that purpose, the vertical shift of the ribbon is detected by a sensor associated with an optical detection device. The detection of this shift prompts the modification, in a circuit, of the number of steps per time unit of the step motor.

Abstract: A circular type tension applying apparatus for slit band plates comprises a plurality of pairs of upper and lower endless belts for interposing the respective slit band plate, an upper pressure applying member for allowing the upper endless belts to rotate and for applying pressure to the upper endless belts, and a lower pressure applying member for allowing the lower endless belts to rotate and for applying pressure to the lower endless belts. Each of the endless belts is able to rotate independently and circularly, and an outer surface of the endless belts being larger in friction than an inner surface of the endless belts. Both of the upper and lower pressure applying members are substantially circular in section. Furthermore, the endless belts have sufficient compressibility and restoration force in thickness direction so that tension is generated by resistance force from a deformation by compressive strain of the endless belts.

  • Patent number: 5394684
Abstract: A process and apparatus for the control of a yarn storage mechanism on a spinning mill machine is proposed. When yarns are wound up it may occur, e.g. in forming conical bobbins, that more yarn is delivered than is wound up. The yarn which is briefly in excess is here taken up in form of a yarn loop by a compensator arm which intervenes transversely in the course of the yarn and is mounted so as to be capable of swivelling. According to the invention it is proposed that the compensator arm be subjected to the force of a spring which acts upon it increasingly as the yarn loop decreases, and in that the force of an additional elastic element acts upon the compensator arm as further excursion occurs.

  • Patent number: 5392976
Abstract: A master tape movable in a closed loop including a pinch roller transfers a mirror image to a slave tape movable in a closed loop including a capstan. A thermomagnetic layer on the slave tape has a Curie temperature above which magnetic information is destroyed and below which magnetic information can be recorded on such layer. The thermomagnetic layer is heated above the Curie temperature, thereby becoming lengthened by thermal expansion just before the slave tape reaches the capstan. A downstream portion of a peripheral surface, preferably defining a cylindrical segment, on a first guide receives a pressurized fluid for sensing the tape tension in accordance with the tape width, distance from the cylinder axis and fluid pressure. An upstream portion of the guide peripheral surface receives a vacuum adjustable to regulate tape tension in response to variations in the pressurized fluid pressure.
