Particularly useful in the production of thermoplastics such as polyethylene terephthalate films and in a preferred embodiment facilitates the threading of the film after a malfunction, e.g., splitting in the stenter. The production web is fed to a dump while splicing and rethreading is effected by feeding a leader web through a subsequent stage of the apparatus, e.g., to a wind-up device. The leader web is fed into the wind-up at the same speed as the production web passing to dump and the webs are spliced together by electrostatic charges. • Patent number: 3970231
Abstract: To facilitate the introduction of running yarns into injector nozzles the cross section of the inlet openings of the said nozzles are enlarged before the yarns are laid in, the yarns are sucked into the enlarged openings and subsequently the openings are reduced to their initial dimensions. The injector nozzles are preferably used in jet stufferbox texturizing processes or with suction guns. Without special threading aids, yarns and threads supplied at high speed are sucked in automatically and conveyed into spaces under elevated pressure.

  • Patent number: 3966868
Abstract: The invention relates to the processing of photographic material such as photographic film which has a tendency to curl in roller type photographic processing equipment, without attaching a separate leader portion to the film. After removing the curl from an end portion of the film, it is processed in a roller type photographic processing equipment without curling around the transporting rollers. The invention also provides a method of making this leaderless processing possible. This is performed by deforming a portion of the photographic material so as to prevent the tendency to curl to allow positive selfleading through the roller type processing equipment. Another embodiment of the invention provides a one-piece, partially curled, photographic material wherein curl has been removed from a portion, thus making the film suitable for photographic processing equipment.Another embodiment provides an apparatus for preventing curl in a portion of photographic material.

  • Patent number: 3952934
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for applying designs to pierceable materials, such as fabrics, paper goods, leather, etc., from a continuous supply strip containing intermittent design portions equally spaced along the length of the supply strip. The apparatus comprises feeding means for intermittently feeding the supply strip to a shearing, bending, driving and clinching station positioned above a clinching die; shearing means for severing a length of said supply strip from the end thereof; bending means for bending the cut off length into an approximately U-shaped member having a bight portion and side leg portions; driving means for driving the U-shaped member into the clinching die and through any pierceable material positioned above the die; and locater means for establishing a proper start position for the supply strip so that the design portions thereof will constitute the bight portions of the U-shaped members.

  • Patent number: 3948020
Abstract: Apparatus for making and manipulating sheet-like paper, plastic or metallic blanks in a packing machine has a pivotable conveyor with a gripper which pulls the leader of a running web across the path of successive mandrels or cigarette packs on an indexible turret whereby the gripper overcomes the resistance of a mechanical or pneumatic clamping device which holds the leader of the running web in a position in which the leader can be engaged by the gripper when the conveyor completes a return stroke. The running web is severed by a pair of knives which are installed between the clamping device and the gripper and are caused to cut the web when the gripper reaches an end position in which a sufficient length of the running web is moved across the path of an oncoming mandrel or cigarette pack.

  • Patent number: 3946922
Abstract: A photographic copying machine wherein the leader of a fresh web of photographic paper is automatically threaded through a copying station and thereupon through one or more additional stations whereby the leader advances along an elongated path which is defined by stationary and pivotable guide members. Each pivotable guide member is movable by an electromagnet between an operative position in which it overlies at least a portion of an opening provided by the adjacent stationary guide member or members and an inoperative position in which the respective opening is exposed. Pivotable guide members are provided at a copying station where the web is exposed to printing light and at a feeding station where the web can form one or more loops in a suitable magazine when the respective pivotable guide member is moved to its inoperative position.

  • Patent number: 3941290
Abstract: A chart recorder has a drawer containing a supply of chart paper fed to the chart marking area, and an accumulation of marked chart paper received from the chart marking area. A flexible curved guide is connected to the drawer and to a permanent fixed guide and assumes different configurations when the drawer is moved from the chart accumulating position during a recording mode of operation, to a chart loading position when the drawer is moved to position for removing an accumulation of marked chart paper and installing and threading a new supply of chart paper during the chart threading mode. The configuration of the flexible guide aids in threading paper onto a drive roll during the threading mode, and aids in guiding the paper around obstructions and onto the roll during the recording mode.

  • Patent number: 3930602
Abstract: An apparatus for transferring threads from the spinning-cum-finishing part of a machine for continuous production of artificial threads to the take-up and winding arrangement thereof includes thread guiding tubes with thread guides for centering the thread along the axis of the tube and an ejector nozzle for feeding a stream of air together with the thread into each respective tube. The thread guide situated at the exit end of the tube includes a cup-shaped member with an aperture made through the center of the bottom thereof and a port made in the side wall of the member, communicating with the aperture. There is mounted adjacent to the cup-shaped member, in opposition to the port thereof, a screen for slowing down the air stream issuing from the tube together with the thread. This structure prevents misdirecting of the thread to the nearby parts and stations of the take-up and winding arrangement.

  • Patent number: 3930487
Abstract: Certain types of heat-exchangers have tubes opening through a tube sheet to a manifold having an access opening offset from alignment with the tube ends. A tool for inserting a device, such as for inspection or repair, is provided for use in such instances. The tool is formed by a flexible guide tube insertable through the access opening and having an inner end provided with a connector for connection with the opening of the tube in which the device is to be inserted, and an outer end which remains outside of the chamber, the guide tube having adequate length for this arrangement. A flexible transport hose for internally transporting the device slides inside of the guide tube. This hose is long enough to slide through the guide tube, into the heat-exchanger tube, and through the latter to the extent required for the use of the device.
