    Abstract: The invention relates to a method of protecting equipment intended to operate at high temperature in the presence of a fluid containing at least one hydrocarbon and/or carbon monoxide against corrosion by metal dusting, method in which pieces of the equipment are made from an alloy containing nickel, iron, chromium and/or aluminum, and in which said pieces of the equipment are protected from said corrosion by a protective coating. This method is characterized in that said equipment pieces protected in this way are connected to each other by means of joining pieces, said joining pieces being protected beforehand by a protective coating over at least part of their surface intended to be brought into contact with said fluid at high temperature, and in that each of the connections intended to be subjected to said corrosion is produced by external welding of the ends of the joining piece with said pieces of equipment.

Further, the present invention provides a method for repairing a component by replacing a damaged portion and re-inserting a replacement section. In general, the present invention provides in one embodiment a method for joining metallic members comprising: preparing a surface of a first metallic member, thereby providing an oxide-free surface; preparing a surface of a second metallic member, thereby providing an oxide-free surface; applying pressure to the first and second metallic members, thereby forcing the surface of the first metallic member and the surface of the second metallic member together and forming a joint area; sealing an outer edge of the joint area; and subjecting the members to a hot isostatic process operation.

    Abstract: A composite shaft/disc workpiece which is assembled from a disc with a passage hole and from a shaft by friction welding is disclosed. The outer wall of the shaft has a plurality of steps in the connection region with the disc, the radius of the steps becoming larger in a direction of the axis. The passage hole of the disc is provided with webs, the radius of which likewise becomes larger in a direction of the axis and between which annular recesses are present. The webs and steps to be connected overlap in the radial direction, so that, during the welding of the shaft and disc, annular connecting portions are obtained in the region of the webs and steps, annular cavities being formed between the connecting portions. The cavities represent a weight saving, as compared with composite shaft/disc workpices made of solid material, and can also be used as parts of media ducts.

The multi-element composite object includes a first component fabricated from a first metal. A second component, fabricated from a second metal, is brazed to the first component. A third component, fabricated from a third metal, is inertia welded to the second component. The first metal may be provided as a titanium alloy, e.g. a TiNi alloy. The second metal may be provided as low-carbon mild or alloy steel. The third metal may be provided as alloy steel, e.g., 9310 nickel alloy steel. In an embodiment, the multi-element composite object is a gear assembly, with the first element of the gear assembly object being a shaft and the third element of the gear assembly being a gear member with hardened teeth surfaces. The first and second components can be mechanically keyed together via an anti-rotational element.

    Abstract: To alter the surface qualities of nonreactive materials, such as polypropylene and polyethylene in order to provide a means for bonding the plastic to metal, hard granular materials of oxides or carbides are partially impregnated into the surface of the plastic by application of heat and pressure so that granular edges remain exposed. Thereafter, a silver coating is applied over the impregnated plastic to interlock with the granules. The composite layered plastic then provides a means for soldering or bonding the plastic to a metallic coupling using either a bonding cement or a low temperature solder such as bismuth, lead, or tin based solder. Abrasion-resistant qualities also are improved by impregnating the internal surfaces of a plastic tube in order to improve its wear-resistance during transporting abrasive slurries of sand, coal, and the like.

Leaf spring mounting arms have low torsional spring constants and yet have sufficient strength to withstand shipping and handling loads for motor assemblies and to permit all angle motor mounting. The mounting member spring constants for axial, radial and tilting vibration modes are selected in specific forms so that the characteristic vibration transmissibility ratios for these modes are each close to unity. However, the characteristic torsional mode vibration transmissibility is substantially less than unity. In particularly preferred embodiments of the invention, sheet steel having a martensitic grain structure is utilized to form the mounting members.
