    Abstract: The invention provides methods of manufacturing stainless steel tubing, pipe and shafts by utilizing air hardenable stainless steel. Such pipe, tubing and shafts have the important characteristics of low weight, shaft flex, torque, bend point and strength and have many uses. The shafts include a plurality of air hardenable metal segments of selected length, thickness and shape that are assembled into a shaft. This assembly is subsequently contacted with a brazing material and then placed into a controlled, non-oxidative atmosphere furnace of a sufficient temperature such that the assembly is simultaneously brazed and hardened. The tubing can include having a brazed lock seam which provides strength. The present invention further provides reinforcing members that are also brazed within the shaft, tubing or pipe while the outer piece is hardened.

The jacket (11), bottom part (12) and cover (13) of the container (1) are produced with a double wall of composite construction consisting of a thin inner sheet of corrosion-proof special steel and an outer sheet of normal steel with a thickness greater than that of the inner sheet. It is possible to produce the container (1) of clad sheet metal with a thin inner layer of special steel and a thicker outer layer of normal steel.

    Abstract: An end wall 9, for attachment to a container, has a central panel 10 and surrounded by a channel portion 11 which includes a deposit of solder 19 in the form of a paste of solder and flux. The can end 9 is joined by a double seam 23 to a sidewall 12 of a container body. Heating of the double seam melts the solder to create a soldered joint between the end wall and sidewall. The invention is to be used in the manufacture of containers requiring strong double seams and may be used to make containers for carriage of dangerous goods. Apparatus for applying solder pastes to can ends is described in which paste is urged from a pot against convex surface 37 before passing through oulet nozzles 38 onto a can end.

    Abstract: A more versatile and improved mechanism is provided for internally maintaining can side seams uniformly aligned, for instance as they advance from a forming horn for registration with a molten solder jet or equivalent applicator. In a preferred form an elongated cage-type horn extension comprises circumferentially spaced rods or tubes arranged to progressively deflect successive can bodies thereon radially outwardly from circular to ellipsoidal cross-section. The extension incorporates interchangeable slot formations selectively to accurately guide and accommodate different seam widths. The rods or tubes, when worn from use, may be rotated about their axes to present fresh, unworn surfaces engageable with the can interiors on their side seams. The invention insures uniformity of the soldered side-seam joints and avoids interference with lithography on the can bodies.
