Patent number: 9121424Abstract: A component connection between a first component and a second component involves the first component having a fold that at least sections of an edge region of the second component engage, and at least sections of the components being bonded to one another by an adhesion agent in the region of the fold. An end region of the fold is shaped in such a way that a distance between the first and second components increases towards the end region, so that a funnel-shaped, outward-opening gap is formed between the two components, in which the surfaces of the two components are either joined to each other by the adhesion agent or provided with a coating across their entire surface area.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 2011Date of Patent: September 1, 2015Assignee: Daimler AGInventors: Uwe Stefani, Ulrich Walther

Patent number: 6386427Abstract: In the present invention, by the method using a backing material such as copper, which is not melted by a welding heat source, in an end face of a member without using a backing metal or consumable backing material at a joint welding time, overlay welding is performed to increase a plate thickness and a plate width. Thereafter, edge preparation including a member of a designed joint weld location and an overlay weld is performed, and the groove processed portion is placed to an opponent member to provide joint welding in order to obtain an effective throat depth more than a plate thickness and a plate width of the member.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 2001Date of Patent: May 14, 2002Assignee: Machida Steel Structure CorporationInventors: Shunji Iwago, Masayoshi Uchida

Patent number: 5871140Abstract: The invention provides methods of manufacturing stainless steel tubing, pipe and shafts by utilizing air hardenable stainless steel. Such pipe, tubing and shafts have the important characteristics of low weight, shaft flex, torque, bend point and strength and have many uses. The shafts include a plurality of air hardenable metal segments of selected length, thickness and shape that are assembled into a shaft. This assembly is subsequently contacted with a brazing material and then placed into a controlled, non-oxidative atmosphere furnace of a sufficient temperature such that the assembly is simultaneously brazed and hardened. The tubing can include having a brazed lock seam which provides strength. The present invention further provides reinforcing members that are also brazed within the shaft, tubing or pipe while the outer piece is hardened.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1995Date of Patent: February 16, 1999Inventor: Edward J. Patent number: 5503322Abstract: A sheet metal container (1) used as a retainable or nonretainable container for transport and storage of liquids has a fill neck (3) which can be sealed with a cap (4) and another neck (5) in the bottom area for connecting a discharge and flushing cock, and an external lattice jacket (6) of metal. A pallet (9) is formed as a flat bottom pan (10) from sheet for form-fittingly accommodating the sheet metal container (1) which is equipped with a drainage bottom. The sheet metal container (1) is welded together from a jacket (11), a bottom part (12) and a cover (13). The jacket (11), bottom part (12) and cover (13) of the container (1) are produced with a double wall of composite construction consisting of a thin inner sheet of corrosion-proof special steel and an outer sheet of normal steel with a thickness greater than that of the inner sheet. It is possible to produce the container (1) of clad sheet metal with a thin inner layer of special steel and a thicker outer layer of normal steel.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 1995Date of Patent: April 2, 1996Assignee: Schutz-Werke GmbH & Co. Patent number: 5242254Abstract: An end wall 9, for attachment to a container, has a central panel 10 and surrounded by a channel portion 11 which includes a deposit of solder 19 in the form of a paste of solder and flux. The can end 9 is joined by a double seam 23 to a sidewall 12 of a container body. Heating of the double seam melts the solder to create a soldered joint between the end wall and sidewall. The invention is to be used in the manufacture of containers requiring strong double seams and may be used to make containers for carriage of dangerous goods. Apparatus for applying solder pastes to can ends is described in which paste is urged from a pot against convex surface 37 before passing through oulet nozzles 38 onto a can end.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1992Date of Patent: September 7, 1993Assignee: CarnaudMetalbox plcInventor: George Harold

Patent number: 4738560Abstract: A connection of an outer sheet metal member with an inner sheet metal member whereby the outer sheet metal member must form an optically smooth surface. For that purpose, the outer sheet metal member is folded over the inner sheet metal member and a welding seam is then made from the folded-over side by means of a low energy welding process, for example, special forms of the protective gas welding or energy beam welding, and more particularly in such a manner that only the folded-over part of the outer sheet metal member and the inner sheet metal member fuse. The non-folded-over side of the outer sheet metal member thereby shows no impairment whatsoever by the welded connection.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1985Date of Patent: April 19, 1988Assignee: Bayerische Motoren Werke AGInventors: Gerhard Brussow, Alfred Ruger, Dieter Konig

Patent number: 4249692Abstract: A more versatile and improved mechanism is provided for internally maintaining can side seams uniformly aligned, for instance as they advance from a forming horn for registration with a molten solder jet or equivalent applicator. In a preferred form an elongated cage-type horn extension comprises circumferentially spaced rods or tubes arranged to progressively deflect successive can bodies thereon radially outwardly from circular to ellipsoidal cross-section. The extension incorporates interchangeable slot formations selectively to accurately guide and accommodate different seam widths. The rods or tubes, when worn from use, may be rotated about their axes to present fresh, unworn surfaces engageable with the can interiors on their side seams. The invention insures uniformity of the soldered side-seam joints and avoids interference with lithography on the can bodies.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 1978Date of Patent: February 10, 1981Assignee: USM CorporationInventor: Frederick S.
