Nonreclosable Box Having A Section Of Box Material Which Is Completely Separated From The Box During Tearing (e.g., Tear Strip) Patents (Class 229/240)
  • Publication number: 20030201315
Abstract: A re-usable and self-sealing box, and a flat blank that can be manipulated into the box, that can indicate tampering includes top flaps having two or more attachment and tear strips extending from the box sides. At least two of the top flaps each include an attachment strip that can be attached to another top flap or a side to close the box and a tear strip that can be removed from the top flap to separate the flap from the attachment strip. To initially close the box, a first top flap having an attachment strip is attached to a third top flap or to a side. After separating the first top flap from the attachment strip, the box can be closed a second time by attaching a second top flap having an attachment strip to the fourth top flap or to a side. To provide a box that can be re-used more than twice, four top flaps each include an attachment strip and a tear strip.

Abstract: An improved display carton. The carton of the invention includes a front panel having lines of weakness extending from the top corners of the panel down to the scoreline defining the bottom of the front panel. Lines of weakness are also provided in one or more of the flaps defining the top of the carton. The flaps on the top of the carton do not completely close the carton so that a user may grasp the carton at the top and pull on the top panel to remove portions of the top and front panels and reveal the product within the case. A particularly advantageous feature of the invention,is the use of a cut in a scoreline to improve the compressive strength of the carton. The cut is made at the bottom of one or more columns of flutes at a point where the flute would otherwise bend due to the presence of a scoreline defining a fold. The cut causes a complete cut of the flute rather than folding; the complete cut results in an increase in compressive strength when compared to the folded flute.

The free edges of the skirts are vertically spaced apart. The carton is in the form of a rectangular parallelepiped with a vertical post at each of the four corners. Ends of the side and end skirts of the top and bottom closures are glued to respective corner posts, leaving middle, unglued portions of the skirts. The corners of the top closure panel and the ends of the top closure panel skirts are perforated to permit tearing. After loading the carton with product, typically cylindrical containers, the top closure is glued to the posts. For opening the carton, the middle, unglued portions of the top closure are ripped upwardly, thus removing most of the top closure to thus permit side and top access to the product containers.

  • Patent number: 5470016
Abstract: A reducible volume container includes a package wall having an interior surface and an exterior surface, with at least one tear strip formed in the package wall. The tear strip is defined by a pair of generally parallel frangible tear lines. Each tear line includes a pair of generally parallel creases formed on the interior surface of the package wall, and a linear cut formed in the exterior of the package wall. The linear cut is disposed in an area between the parallel creases and has a depth extending only partly through the thickness of the package wall.

  • Patent number: 5358176
Abstract: A tearstrip opening for the closure flap of a paperboard container is formed by a single line of tear and an adjacent delamination area located within the closure flap. The tearstrip is applied to one or more of the closure flaps of the container as required. The tearstrip is removed by the combined action of separation of the paperboard along perforations which define the single line of tear and ply separation of the paperboard adjacent to a partial depth cut line of weakness spaced from the single line of tear. When removed, the tear strip releases the closure flap from a side wall of the container while leaving a portion of the closure flap still attached to the side wall.

  • Patent number: 5348147
Abstract: A cardboard carton is constructed that is particularly useful for holding a stack of paper so that individual cut sheets from the stack may be readily removed. The carton bottom has an open top and substantially open ends and closed sides, while the carton top has a Z-fold top panel, and one or more tear strips between adhesive connecting the carton top to the carton bottom and the main part of the carton top. The carton bottom, with its open top facing downwardly, is either moved over a stack of paper, or formed over the stack of paper. Then it is rotated 180.degree. about a horizontal axis (as by pivoting a U-shaped continuous conveyor about a horizontal axis), and conveyed to a station where it is moved with respect to a carton top so that the open bottom of the carton top goes over the carton bottom, and then is glued in place. Two opposite flaps on the carton lid may be glued to the bottom surface of the carton bottom panel to provide a lifting space beneath the carton.

  • Patent number: 5332150
Abstract: A shipping/display container that may be opened without having to use a knife or other sharp instrument, and a blank for forming such a container. The container blank includes a plurality of side panels foldably connected together in a longitudinal series, and a connecting flap foldably connected to a first end of the side panels. The side panels form a line of weakness extending substantially completely across each of the side panels, and the connecting flap forms a notch extending from the first end of the side panels. To form the container, the connecting flap is connected to the second end of the side panels, forming the side panels into a continuous side wall for the container; and as this is done, the notch in the connecting flap is positioned over the end portion of the line of weakness.

  • Patent number: 5299733
Abstract: Disclosed is a package formed from a one-piece wrapper, typically made of carrier board, that is folded around twenty-four cans or bottles including a top and bottom of the package having cuts or perforations that partially separate the package into two twelve-packs; each side of the package having at least one tear-strip aligned with the cuts or perforations that will complete the separation into two twelve-packs; and the top of the package having a second pair of tear-strips which will allow the two twelve-packs to be separated into four six-packs. The wrapper can be folded in such a manner that the two six-packs of each of the two twelve-packs is separated by a center divider in the wrapper. This divider has a perforated top end which is aligned with the tear-strips. The two sides of the divider are held together by an adhesive which allows the six-packs to be separated.

  • Patent number: 5170934
Abstract: A can or bottle drink carton comprising expandable compartments affixed to its opposite sides. Tear strips associated with each compartment are activated to facilitate deployment of the compartments. The carton can be converted into an ice chest by unzipping a tearstrip on each side of the carton, lifting ice cover flaps on both sides of the carton, popping out expandable ice compartments on both sides of the carton resulting in compartments ready to receive ice to keep the can or bottle drinks cold. The preferred embodiment would not employ the tearstrip nor the flap created thereby. Rather, it would facilitate securing the compartments closed against the sides of the chest with impermeable glue. This allows the compartments to be deployed by tugging the compartment free from the side of the chest. After use the carton is disposable and recyclable.
