The resistive element comprises a housing, of a relatively low temperature coefficient of expansion material such as a steel, enclosing a pair of coplanar plates of predetermined dimensions and fabricated from a relatively high temperature coefficient of expansion material, such as a magnesium alloy. The adjacent walls of the plates define the sidewalls of a channel for fluid flow. The plates are slidably mounted inside the housing so as to vary the width of the rectangular channel at a constant rate in response to incremental variations in the fluid temperature.
