Patent number: 4709856Abstract: A coupling for two adjacent rail sections of a model railway has a bed member with rails and conductor rail held thereon and downwardly extending projections electrically connected to the rail and conductor rail. A coupling member is arranged beneath the bed members and has two upwardly opening, electrically conductive, elastic, locking elements that engage the extending projections such that projections on adjacent rail sections are mechanically and electrically connected. One locking element comprises upwardly protruding elastic tongues that interlock with the projections, and the other locking element comprises two parallel spring wires, connected by a contact spring and set apart by spacers such that projections are insertable there between. A locking element, on the underside of the coupling member, forms the elastic tongues. A connecting element, resting against the locking element, protrudes on both sides of the coupling member in the form of a contact lug.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1986Date of Patent: December 1, 1987Assignee: Gebr. Patent number: 4515374Abstract: A moveable target assembly includes a self-propelled carriage upon which a target is mounted for rolling movement across terrain. Axially flexible track sections are coupled together in an end to end fashion so as to define a prescribed course or path which the target will follow. The track defines a substantially planar surface and is relatively thin so that it lies flat on the surface of the terrain and thus does not present an impediment to other vehicles, infantry troops or the like that desire to traverse it. However, as the carriage is propelled along the course defined by the track, a track guide will cause successive portions of the flexible track to be initially upwardly displaced so as to perform its guiding functions yet such portions will be returned to their terrain-engaging relationship once the carriage has advanced.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 1983Date of Patent: May 7, 1985Inventor: Thomas W. Patent number: 4372489Abstract: A track section for use with an electrically actuated toy vehicle and which can be joined end to end with other identical track sections to complete a vehicle track. The section includes at least one vehicle path and at least two electrically-conducting strips from which the vehicle obtains its electrical power. The strips extend from end to end of the section. The end of each strip is in a recess which tapers width-wise in a direction away from the end of the section. The recess is formed by an abutment wall adjacent to the end of the strip and a cam wall inclined to the longitudinal axis of the section. The cam wall is adapted to engage a corresponding cam wall on an adjacent section when the two sections are brought together so as to move the ends of the strips of the two sections into side-by-side engagement between respective abutment walls of the two sections. The section has a snap-fit retainer so that two sections can be releasably coupled together.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 1980Date of Patent: February 8, 1983Assignee: The Refined Industry Company LimitedInventor: Cheuk-Ming Lee

Patent number: 4357877Abstract: An electric motor driven toy train is disclosed which has a novel wheel and track assembly for minimizing slippage and avoiding binding between the train's wheels and the track as the train goes around a curve section of the track. The train's wheels are each stepped in cross-section with a small diameter rim and a large diameter rim, and the wheels ride on track sections with rails that are also stepped in cross-section. The inside rail of a curve track section is structured so that only the inside train wheels' small diameter rims ride thereover, and the outside rail is structured so that only the outside wheels' large diameter rims ride thereover. The train comprises multiple cars, each of which is articulated about a vertical axis and each of which has only a single axle so as to minimize the turning radius of the train set. A child sits upon the second car, the coal tender, and steers the first car, the locomotive of the set.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 1980Date of Patent: November 9, 1982Inventor: James F. Mariol

Patent number: 4260104Abstract: Improved curvable track for model railroads in which a track bed of simulated crossties is formed as an integral flexible structure by linking the ties with a continuous web underlying the rail on one side of the track. Opposite the continuous web and underlying the other rail of the track, the ties are linked in alternate pairs. The rail of the track overlying the continuous web of the crosstie bed is secured thereto by simulated spikes against both lateral and longitudinal movement while the opposite rail overlying the alternately linked tie pairs is secured by simulated spike heads only against lateral movement and is free to move longitudinally with respect to the tie bed.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 1979Date of Patent: April 7, 1981Assignee: Atlas Tool CompanyInventor: Stephan J. Patent number: 4231294Abstract: A toy train in which each track length or section is mounted in a base having a spaced longitudinal slot parallel with the tracks and outside of the tracks. In addition to the conventional rails, and lying between them, a pair of spaced parallel rails are mounted for carrying the electric current to the train. A transparent curved cover is arched over the tracks with the edges of the cover entering the slots in the base. When the track lengths are joined at the ends, a connecting strip also joins the contiguous edges of the transparent cover to form a continuous enclosed transparent tube. The train is generally annular to fit the tube. Besides the conventional flanged wheels for riding the rails, the train is also provided with a pair of grooved wheels adapted to engage the electrical rails. This not only supplies the electrical current to the train, but also serves to hold the train on the tracks and prevent derailment at high speeds especially around the curves.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 1979Date of Patent: November 4, 1980Inventor: Philippe Arzoumanian
