The burner body portion of the device is constituted of a pair of concentric tubes, each provided with an inlet and annular outlet for the fuel and oxygen, respectively. A deflector of conic shape is axially mounted within the inside tube, the sloped side of which is faced inwardly toward the annular outlets and in a straight line therewith so that both of the concentric tubular columns forming the streams emitted from the annular outlets of the concentric tubes impact on the sloped surface near the apex of the cone to admix one stream with the other, and are forced outwardly to form a combustible mixture which, on ignition, burns ex situ of the burner body. The deflector is extended outwardly from the burner body at a critical distance ranging from about 0.5 to about 5 times the diameter of the annular outlet through which the oxygen is ejected.

Abstract: The steam ejection nozzle comprises an elongated body which internally defines a chamber. One end of the body is open for coupling to a steam delivery duct and the other end has a plurality of steam discharge outlets. The steam ejection nozzle furthermore comprises a lamination cone which can be partially immersed within a fluid to be emulsified. The lamination cone is skimmed by the flow of steam discharged from the outlets in order to facilitate penetration of the steam into the liquid and create a vortex which increases the inclusion of air.

Abstract: A spray head including a flow passage for the liquid to be sprayed and a rotary distributor head interrupting the forward flow of liquid from the flow passage. The distributor head presents the liquid flow with an imperforate redistribution surface which inclines obliquely across the flow so as in operation to redirect the flow both forwardly and rearwardly of the distributor head. In one version of the device, the distributor is provided with angled impeller surfaces so as to derive a distributor-rotating reaction force from the flow of liquid received from the flow passage.

  • Patent number: 5139748
Abstract: Hydrocarbon feedstock is dispersed in an FCC riser by directing jets of atomized feed droplets into a flowing stream of catalyst particles in a direction substantially perpendicular to the axis of the riser. By directing the feed into the riser in a substantially perpendicular direction feed is more quickly dispersed across the entire cross section of the riser. By quickly dispersing feed the mixture of hydrocarbons and catalyst particles is completely mixed after traveling only a short distance along the riser from the point of feed introduction. Reducing this contact zone length improves the quality of riser products by eliminating variations in the contact time between the feed and catalyst. In addition to the short contact zone length this invention also combines the desirable features of catalyst pre-acceleration and feed atomization.

  • Patent number: 5021221
Abstract: Vaporized silicon halide is mixed with a vaporized alkali metala in a reactor chamber in an exothermic reaction producing liquid silicon droplets and gaseous alkali metal halide, and then passed out of the reactor chamber through a nozzle in a supersonic jet. The supersonic jet is produced by utilizing vacuum means to maintain the exit chamber at a lower pressure than the reactor chamber. Separation of the silicon from the salt by-products is performed by shock wave impaction separation technique wherein the products of the complete reaction between the alkali metal and silicon halide are made to impinge upon an unrestricted, flat surface so that the direction of flow of the gas changes abruptly and a shock zone is created above the flat surface. The silicon droplets are carried by their large forward momentum through the shock zone onto the separating surface where they are deposited. The gaseous alkali metal halide flows across the surface and is thus separated from the silicon product.

Abstract: A quickly adjustable foaming chamber stem for a foam-applying fire-fighting nozzle wherein the fire-fighter can quickly switch from applying on optimum foam to a stream with an optimum throw. The stem is comprised of a deflector plate and a mixing plate that define a foaming chamber there between, the deflector plate having ducts that, when open, communicate a portion of the liquid and foam-stabilizing concentrate into the chamber to form a foam. The foaming chamber, maintained at approximately atmospheric pressure, forms a small homogeneously bubbled maximum foam through liquid from the ducts striking and reflecting from the mixing plate, causing thereby turbulence and agitation. Surface portions of the mixing plate are inclined to maximize agitation.
