  • Patent number: 8732916
Abstract: Techniques for detachably joining a first component and a second component includes a band clamp, a tensioning device, a plurality of shoes, and a plurality of brackets. The band clamp is configured to cause the plurality of shoes to engage an abutting cylindrical flange of each of the first component and the second component and to provide a sufficient clamping pressure to join the first component with the second component. Each of the plurality of brackets is attached to one of the first component and the second component. The sufficient clamping pressure results from redundant, independently inspectable, sources, a primary redundant source being circumferential tension in the band clamp, caused by tightening the tensioning device, to produce a first radial restraining force on the shoes, and a secondary redundant source being a second radial restraining force, applied by way of the plurality of brackets, to the band clamp.

  • Patent number: 8720907
Abstract: An expansion ring assembly seals a gasket with respect to an annular wall of a rigid structure. The expansion ring assembly includes two arcuate expansion ring bands that cooperate to define a generally circular profile. At one side of the expansion ring assembly, a first pair of ends of the expansion ring bands overlap and include a ratcheting mechanism which allows the ring to incrementally expand but not to contract. At another location of the expansion ring assembly, a second pair of ends are joined by a drive mechanism for engaging and driving apart the opposing ends of an expansion ring to thereby non-incrementally expand the ring. The ratchet mechanism may be used to initially set and hold the expansion ring against a gasket in a desired position and to provide an initial expansion pressure, i.e., for a coarse adjustment. The drive mechanism may then be used to provide a final expansion pressure of the gasket, i.e., for a fine adjustment.

Abstract: A self-retightening screw-type clamp with predetermined adjusting range for a given clamp size, attained by a predetermined number of apertures provided in the inner band portion of a separate band part in conjunction with a sleeve member of predetermined length interposed between the retightening spring and a part-cylindrical tightening member. The full adjusting range of the screw member is made possible by deforming the threads near its free end. Additionally, to facilitate assembly, the inner band portion of the separate band part is provided with a tongue-like extension which is adapted to engage with a latching device formed in the clamping band so as to hold the tongue-like extension of the inner band portion of the separate clamping band part at least close to the outer surface of the clamping band.

  • Patent number: 5018768
Abstract: A pipe coupling for encircling and coupling aligned pipe ends is formed of aligned arcuate segments that are fastened together. The segments are hingedly connected together at adjacent ends by means of a hook formed on the end of one segment and a hook receiving loop formed on the corresponding end of the other segment. The loop forms an elongated rectangular opening defined by a pair of radially outwardly extending legs, that are joined to the segment and an axle connecting the legs. The hook has a similar cross section, but is loosely fitted within the opening. A depression is formed in the axle, at one leg, and a correspondingly aligned depression is formed in the segment wall adjacent the opposite leg. The hook has a projection which normally prevents the hook from withdrawal from the loop opening when the hook is pivoted relative to the opening.

Abstract: A circular pipe coupling for coupling aligned pipe ends is formed of arcuate segments arranged end to end. Each segment has outwardly extending lugs formed on its opposite ends, with the lugs on the adjacent segment ends being interconnected. One of each pair of interconnected lugs is formed with an integral hook, with a corresponding opening for receiving the hook formed on the opposite lug and providing an axle upon which the hook is engaged to form a hinge connection, except that one of the pairs of lugs is connected together by a manually releasable mechanical fastener, such as a bolt. One of the segments may be manually positioned upon the adjacent pipe ends to be coupled, with one or more segments freely dangling downwardly therefrom under the force of gravity, which sections may be manually pivotal upwardly for encircling the pipes and for applying the releasable mechanical fastener.

  • Patent number: 4736921
Abstract: A clamp for releasably securing a lock to a bicycle frame is disclosed. The clamp is formed as a unitary body of a hard yet resilient plastic material, which unitary body defines a pair of spaced tubular openings: one to fit about the frame and the other to hold the lock. The pair of tubular openings are axially split at their respective outer peripheries, with an arcuate segment being removed from each tubular opening along the respective splits. A pair of opposed parallel shoulders extend astride each of the splits, with each pair of shoulders featuring fastening means. Preferably, the plastic material is nylon. Preferably, one of the pair of spaced tubular openings is tapered along its axial length.

Abstract: A saddle or U-bolt clamp is formed from a unitary sheet metal stamping folded to provide hexagonal sleeve formations which receive the legs of the bolt in axially slidable relation. Torque transmitted to the ends of the sleeve formations as the securing nuts are drawn up on the legs of the bolt against the saddle will construct the saddle and U-bolt's bight around the telescoped tubing parts of the exhaust system of vehicles for which such a clamp commonly is used. The heavy duty use for which such clamp is required is permitted even in those critical applications where the transverse profile of the clamp must be substantially reduced or restricted without loss of efficacy and strength of the clamp.

  • Patent number: 4468842
Abstract: A lockable band clamp, such as clamping together the rims of a housing and a base of an equipment housing, has a flexible band with Vee-shaped portions for positioning around the rims, the rims positioned in the Vee-shaped portions. The ends of the band have end members through which passes a bolt, a tubular member threading on to the bolt. Relative rotation between bolt and tubular member acts to pull the end members together and tighten the band about the rims. The end members have projections which overlap. A locking member which, in a locked position, engages at one end over a rod through the tubular member and at the other end aligns with holes in the projections whereby a padlock can pass through the holes and a formation on the locking member, preventing relative rotation between bolt and tubular member.

  • Patent number: 4373235
Abstract: The present invention includes a clamping system comprising two identical clamping components, which cooperate to form a clamp. One end of the clamp component is provided with a male and a female connector such that in the assembled clamping system the male component of one clamp component mates with the female component of the other clamp component to form a pivotal connection. This pivotal connection allows the opposite ends of the clamp components to be separated to allow the clamp to be placed over an object to be clamped, such as a pipe, while still maintaining the pivotal connection. The clamping system, according to the present invention, is simple in structure, simplifies the production and packaging operation, and is more convenient to use. The present invention may also function as a coupling. In this coupling function, two pipes or two such elements would be coupled to each other by this invention, so as to create a continuous mechanical and/or hydraulic system.

  • Patent number: 4217990
Abstract: A pair of elongated clamp blocks are joined together in laterally spaced, parallel relationship by means of a pair of vertically spaced clamp screws which serve to move the blocks toward and away from each other. Each clamp block is provided with a transverse slot extending longitudinally inward from one end thereof at an oblique angle with respect to the screws. The blocks are disposed adjacent the outer side of a tank with the slots extending angularly outward away from each other. An elongated flat strap is looped about the tank and each end portion thereof is threaded outwardly through the slot in the associated clamp block, then is bent inwardly around the inner portion of the block facing the other block of the pair, and the terminal portion of the strap end is doubled back between the looped portion of the strap and the outer surface of the tank. The screws then are rotated to draw the clamp blocks toward each other, whereby to tighten the strap about the periphery of the tank.
