Patent number: 5964018Abstract: A belt repair system and method is used to repair a broken belt, such as a rive belt. The belt repair system includes one or more belt couplers having first and second body portions with belt engaging members. The body portions of each belt coupler extend within the broken belt at respective first and second broken ends so that the respective belt engaging members engage with engaging regions within the broken belt at the first and second broken ends. The belt repair method includes providing an indication on the broken ends of the broken belt of the location of the engaging regions, forming the engaging regions within the broken belt at the indicated location and inserting the body portions of the belt coupler into the respective engaging regions of the broken belt at the respective broken ends. An optional adhesive or bonding material can be placed between the broken ends to strengthen the coupling of the broken belt.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 1997Date of Patent: October 12, 1999Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventor: Paul E. Patent number: 5226277Abstract: A fastener joins a pair of ends of a weather-strip, where the weather-strip has a channel shaped weather-strip carrier of elastomeric material with an encapsulated U-shaped reinforcement. The spaced apart walls of the carrier are connected by a base and one of the walls of the carrier carries a bulbous weather-strip portion of the weather-strip. The fastener has a base for engaging the base of the carrier. A first wall of the fastener is formed integrally with the base and projects normally from the base for engaging one of the walls of the carrier. A second wall of the fastener is formed integrally with the base and projects normally from the base for engaging the other wall of the carrier. A pair of prongs is formed integrally with the base and projects normally from the base with each prong piercing the base of the carrier near one of the ends and each prong being bent after piercing the base for mechanically retaining the base of the carrier near the end of the carrier.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 1992Date of Patent: July 13, 1993Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Thomas P. Patent number: 4861322Abstract: Apparatus and method for effecting temporary, emergency repairs of an engine when a drive belt breaks and repairs must be made under adverse conditions. Either a linear belt segment or a conventional endless belt may be utilized for the emergency repair. A coupling strip maintains terminal ends of the emergency replacement belt juxtaposed and in close proximity.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1988Date of Patent: August 29, 1989Inventor: Gary M. Reddick

Patent number: 4846770Abstract: An emergency belt construction is set forth wherein a discontinuous belt construction is configured of inter-engaging recesses and projections. The projections and recesses are configured to maximize surface contact between the associated ends of the discontinuous belt for securement thereof. The complementary surfaces are lined with velcro-like material to insure a secure inter-engagement therebetween complementary surfaces to secure the ends of the belt together. Additionally, loop connectors are exteriorly securable about the so secured belt ends to ensure securement.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 1987Date of Patent: July 11, 1989Inventor: Ben J. Lane

Patent number: 4798569Abstract: An emergency belt assembly is provided for temporary replacement of broken fan belts and the like. The assembly comprises a tubular belt made of an elastomeric material, and a connector having a shank with a plurality of barbs on each end portion thereof. The maximum outer transverse dimensions of the barbs on each end portion of the connector decrease from the axially outermost barb to the axially innermost barb, thereby permitting the connector to be easily inserted manually into the tubular ends of the belt. In an alternate embodiment, the connector articulates at a point intermediate its end portions to permit the connector to easily accommodate small radii turns. In yet another embodiment of the present invention, the connector has a plurality of barbs on one end thereof for frictionally engaging the inner surface of a tubular end of a line or belt, and has on its opposite end portion an attachment member, such as an eye, for attaching to a support object, such as a pole, wall, or the like.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 1988Date of Patent: January 17, 1989Inventor: Earl L. Alderfer

Patent number: 4504257Abstract: The invention relates to a universal V-belt of the type used in power transmission coupling at least two pulleys together. The belt comprises two elements, a connector element and a tube element. The connector element is uniform in cross-section and has outwardly-directed ridges over its total length. The tube element has a uniform cross-section, and is formed with a continuous longitudinal channel, the walls of which are formed with inwardly-directed ridges. One end of the connector element is inserted into one end of the longitudinal channel for approximately one-half of its length. The other end of the connector is then inserted into the other end of the longitudinal channel. The ridges on the connector and in the longitudinal channel interlock, thereby forming a continuous loop belt solid throughout.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1982Date of Patent: March 12, 1985Inventor: Arthur J. Patent number: 4254666Abstract: A V-belt for coupling at least two pulleys together, the pulleys having a substantially V-shaped groove, the belt being manually installable without moving or adjusting the distance between the pulleys. The particular usage of the present invention is for temporary (emergency) or permanent installation of a "fan" belt found on (but not limited to) conventional vehicles of the V-belt type. The device allows anyone, upon the destruction of a fan belt, to readily and quickly install a temporary pulley belt manually, without tools. For a permanent installation, a small implement may be used with the present device for increased tensioning of the belt in its proper position. The improved belt includes first and second free ends (male and female respectively that are firmly connected together by longitudinally interlocking a plurality of laterally disposed, inclined teeth located near the male end with lateral rows of inclined grooves located in an interlock passage in the female end.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 1979Date of Patent: March 10, 1981Inventor: William D.
