Patent number: 4617716Abstract: In a process for continuously pulling a web of tows of carbonizable material under tension through an oxidizing oven, the web is introduced into the oxidizing oven by initially feeding a leader in the form of a web of heat-resistant cloth through the oven and then heating the oven if the oven is not already hot. The trailing edge of the leader which remains outside of the oven is then spliced to the leading edge of the web of carbonizable tows, and the leader is used to pull the web of carbonizable tows into and through the hot oven. Use of the heat-resistant leader greatly minimizes wastage within the web of carbonizable tows. Splicing of the trailing edge of the lead to the leading edge of the web of carbonizable tows is accomplished by taping, stitching and folding the two edges to form loops therein into which elongated rods are inserted. The two edges are then secured within a splice bar, the opposite halves of which define slots for receiving the two edges and the included rods.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 1984Date of Patent: October 21, 1986Assignee: HitcoInventors: Khin M. Patent number: 4489827Abstract: The present invention provides a splice for high tension belts in which the ends of the belt are curved at about right angles to the belt. Plates are placed on the outside of the two belt ends, spacer bushings are placed between the plates and through apertures in the belt ends, bolts are placed through holes in the two plates and through the spacer bushings, and the bolts are tightened, causing the plates to press against the spacer bushings. The bolts are pretensioned by tightening them to a predetermined tension which is higher than the tension experienced during operation.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 1983Date of Patent: December 25, 1984Assignee: Rexnord Inc.Inventor: William B. Patent number: 4058983Abstract: This invention relates to a trench shoring assembly which includes a pair of spaced apart side walls for vertical disposition within a trench. Spreader pipes and spreader collars interconnect the side walls and allow limited pivotal movement between the wide walls. Each side wall includes outer and inner metal plates connected to a plurality of interconnected structural members which define a main frame. The interconnected structural members include horizontally extending hollow metal beams including a top beam which extends longitudinally along the top of the side wall, two intermediate beams parallel the hollow metal beam and a bottom beam. A hardwood insert is disposed within the top beam to prevent the collapse of the hollow metal beam. Each side wall contains a number of hollow beams extending perpendicularly to the horizontal beams and ribbed members extending perpendicularly to the horizontal beams. These vertical beams and members are interconnected by a strip member.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 1976Date of Patent: November 22, 1977Inventor: James L. Griswold

Patent number: 4056867Abstract: A splicer element for a belt includes juxtaposed splice or clamp elements with a spacer element disposed between the clamp elements. The ends of the belt are disposed between the clamp elements and the spacer element. The surfaces of the clamp elements and the spacer element that contact the belt surfaces are rough, whereby the frictional holding properties of the belt splicer element are greatly increased. One form of surface roughness is a plurality of projections that dig into and may pierce the belt material.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1976Date of Patent: November 8, 1977Assignee: Koppers Company, Inc.Inventors: Edward Wert, Chester Donald Fisher
