  • Patent number: 7559493
Abstract: A media basket mill utilizes a media bed having very small media to attain a mixture of finely divided solids in a liquid vehicle. A bearing construct which journals the rotor of the basket mill within the basket of the mill includes a bearing which is protected against excessive wear by including a recess in the rotor. The recess is juxtaposed with the bearing and communicates with the media bed such that upon rotation of the rotor to pass feedstock through the media bed for a mixing operation, media and feedstock in the vicinity of the bearing will be directed from the recess into the bed of media and feedstock outside the rotor, thereby diverting media and feedstock away from the bearing and deterring excessive wear which might otherwise result from media and feedstock interacting with the bearing during rotation of the rotor for the mixing operation.

Abstract: A material to be treated containing solid particles in a liquid is stirred together with milling media, and irradiated with ultrasonic waves during stirring to finely mill the solid particles to nanometer size and disperse the solid particles in the liquid. The ultrasonic waves create cavitation in the liquid and upon decay of the cavitation, shock waves are produced that cause the solid particles to vigorously collide with one another and with the milling media and these collisions, together with the shearing forces created by collision of the milling media, can produce on a commercial scale nano particles having an average particle size of at most 100 nm.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for grinding granular solids in liquid slurry form within a mill. The solids density of the feed slurry is maintained below the solids density in the mill, thus causing the liquid to flush through the mill, preferentially carrying and discharging finer relative to coarser particles. Discharged solids thus have a smaller concentration of overground solids, and grinding capacity and power consumption by the mill are optimized.

  • Patent number: 5938130
Abstract: An asphalt based material recycling system and method is used to recycle asphalt materials, such as asphalt shingles and tar paper that include granules, fibers or other particles. The asphalt material is simultaneously heated and milled in a heated milling apparatus, such as a heated ball mill, to reduce the asphalt material including granules to a fine mesh in suspension in liquid asphalt. Excess moisture is removed from the asphalt material being recycled by continuously venting the heated milling apparatus. The heated milling apparatus preferably includes a rotatable milling vessel rotated at an acute angle with respect to the horizontal plane and having an opening that provides continuous venting. The shape of the milling vessel allows the liquid level inside the milling vessel to have a liquid head above the outlet region of the milling vessel, for facilitating milling.

By means of delivery elements and stirring elements (35, 37) a suspension stream is generated which passes through the grinding bed in the direction of the arrows (28), leaves the insertion member (28') in the upper region thereof via radially oriented orifices (13) and is circulated via the annular chamber (15) of the reaction vessel (1). The reaction vessel (1) is of pressure-tight design, and heterogenous reactions can proceed inside it in vacuum or pressurized mode.
