  • Patent number: 4172515
Abstract: The moving parts of a tobacco cutting machine and the conveyor or conveyors which transfer tobacco to the cutting machine are driven by a variable speed motor whose speed is regulated in dependency on the volume of tobacco in a duct from which the conveyor or conveyors draw or receive tobacco for transfer into the machine. The height of the pile of tobacco in the duct is monitored by photoelectric cells which transmit signals to a speed regulator for the motor so that the speed of the motor increases and decreases when the height of the pile respectively increases and decreases. The duct receives tobacco from a magazine. Fluctuations of the height of tobacco pile in the duct are due to variations in the rate of tobacco feed from the magazine and/or to changes in size, moisture content and/or temperature of tobacco which is being supplied to the duct.

  • Patent number: 4034918
Abstract: A rotary shredder for waste materials has a pair of counterrotating cutting shafts, each of which mounts a series of spaced-apart disc-type cutters. The cutters on one shaft extend into the spaces between cutters on the other shaft so that the cutters on the two shafts coact to shred material fed therebetween. The two shafts are driven by a reversible radial piston hydraulic motor through a gear train arranged to rotate one cutter shaft at twice the speed of the other. The hydraulic motor is driven by an electric motor-driven fixed or variable displacement pump. A flow-reversing valve in the hydraulic motor control circuit controls the direction of fluid flow through the hydraulic motor. The reversing valve is electrically actuated automatically by a fluid pressure-operated switch to reverse flow and the direction of rotation of the cutters to prevent jamming whenever fluid pressure in the motor circuit rises to an abnormally high level.

  • Patent number: 4035790
Abstract: An apparatus for monitoring the output of a fiber cutter arranged to cut long fiber roving strands into short clippings and to feed the clippings into a slurry-containing mixer, the monitoring apparatus having a plurality of rotatably mounted assemblies each comprising a rotating shaft and a plurality of arms mounted thereon. During normal operation the fiber clippings fall through the moving arms and into an apparatus wherein the fibers are mixed into a slurry, such as a calcined gypsum slurry. Malfunction of the cutting apparatus resulting in the discharge of long fiber strands causes entanglement of the fiber strands with the moving arms, thereby causing rotation of the assemblies to discontinue and actuating an alarm and automatic switches, thereby rendering the entire apparatus inoperative and preventing serious entanglement of the mixing and conveying apparatus which could result in long shut-down periods.

  • Patent number: 3984055
Abstract: High pressure sandmill operation is obtained by balancing the pressure within the vessel on one side of a rotor shaft seal with a higher pressure on the other side of the seal. Pressure switches are employed to sense the pressure within the vessel, the seal housing, and the cooling water jacket surrounding the vessel. The switches are connected in electrical control circuits to deenergize the product pump whenever the sensed pressures are beyond predetermined acceptable ranges. The control circuits also energize lights which indicate which pressure was out of its range and energize a light indicating that the pump motor is deenergized. The control circuit further includes means responsive to the temperature of the product being pumped to the vessel so that an audible warning signal is generated if the temperature exceeds a predetermined level.
