A particle manipulation element is mechanically coupled to the first shaft and in contact with the plurality of particles. The particle manipulation element moves in response to the energy being applied to the first shaft to force some of the particles through the screen and into the environment of the apparatus.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein is a non-clog shredder that is used to shred solid matter entrained in a non-homogenous liquid-solid feed. In one embodiment of the invention, the shredder is located at the bottom of a toilet bowl and is used to shred solid disposable products such as napkins and diapers that are discarded in the toilet bowl. The shredder comprises a generally cylindrical cup that is open at one end, with a circular end-cap at the other end. The end-cap has an axial opening that allows the feed to pass through the cup. In one embodiment of the invention, the opening has recesses and/or teeth on the periphery of the opening. An impeller disposed against the circular end plate creates suction for transfer of the waste through the shredder. A cutting blade on the impeller assembly projects axially through the opening in the end-cap.

Sewage is drawn into the first impeller chamber and pushed into the transfer tube with the first impeller. Sewage from the transfer tube enters the second impeller chamber through a transfer cavity and is pushed out with the second impeller. In a second embodiment, a grinder wheel and shredder ring are added to an inlet of the first impeller housing. A discharge head height is nearly twice that of a single impeller pump.

A support structure, preferably in the form of a “cone”, supports the blade. The cone preferably has a pyramidal structure and in one form extends sufficiently far up the blade so that, typically, no more than 2 to 3 inches of the blade project above the outer surface of the cone. The blade has a triangular structure terminating in a central apex for use in reducing slabs of large sheet materials such as reel broke.

The shoulder-like element (10) may comprise a completely or partially separate element in relation to the rotor, and may be detachable therefrom and replaceable, and also optionally reversible.
