Patent number: 8602343Abstract: A drag/free spool controller incorporated into a fishing reel that has a signal generator mechanically attached to the reel. When the spool spins the signal generator produces a voltage signal, and after a pre-determined number of rotations, the generated signal is compared to a pre-determined value to determine if the spooling corresponds to a fish strike. When the generated voltage signal exceeds the pre-determined value, indicating a fish strike, a solenoid attached to the reel is actuated to disengage the drag mechanism, placing the reel into a free spool position. This action allows the fish to run with the bait while the angler repositions himself to manually engage the drag to set the hook. If after a pre-determined interval the angler fails to manually engage the drag, the solenoid will do so automatically.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 2010Date of Patent: December 10, 2013Inventors: James R. Patent number: 7648096Abstract: A spool brake mechanism 25 is a device for braking a spool. The spool brake mechanism 25 includes a spool brake member 40 and a control component 55. The control component 55 is configured to control a spool brake member with first braking force. The control component 55 is also configured to control the spool brake member with second braking force when tension detected by a tension detection member becomes equal to or less than a reference tension.Type: GrantFiled: November 26, 2008Date of Patent: January 19, 2010Assignee: Shimano Inc.Inventors: Akira Niitsuma, Ken'ichi Kawasaki

Patent number: 7163169Abstract: Disclosed is a system for regulating fishing line tension. The system comprises a plurality of line retainers. Each line retainer comprises a holder on which the line rests, an elongated portion, and a clip that is attached to the surface of a fishing rod proximate the handle. The line retainer may be fabricated as one seamless piece of resilient material or may comprise at least two pieces of different material. The method for regulating the free spooling of a fishing line enables a fishing enthusiast to regulate tension on the fishing line with an open bail or in the free spool position on the drag system.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 2004Date of Patent: January 16, 2007Assignee: ETC III LLCInventors: James R. Patent number: 5996921Abstract: A centrifugal braking apparatus for a baitcasting reel comprises a spool, pivot shafts, brake levers, and a ring-shaped braking member. The spool is rotatably supported between both side plates of a reel main body. Each of the pivot shafts is disposed on the spool so as to be arranged apart from a rotation axis of the spool in a radius direction thereof and extended at right angles to a straight line parallel with the rotation axis of the spool. Each of the brake levers has a tip end portion and a root end portion that is pivotably supported by the pivot shaft so that the tip end portion of the brake lever is movable toward a standard plane, which includes a central axis of the pivot shaft and is perpendicular to the rotation axis of the spool, under a function of centrifugal force produced by rotation of the spool. The ring-shaped braking member is provided on the reel main body so that the tip end portion of the brake lever can be brought into contact with the ring-shaped braking member.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 1998Date of Patent: December 7, 1999Assignee: Ryobi LimitedInventors: Toshihiko Hogaki, Atsuhito Okada, Masayuki Yamamoto, Yoji Yamada, Noboru Nakanishi

Patent number: 5236147Abstract: A fishing reel is provided with a line length measuring device to determine the unwound or wound amount of the fishing line based on the number of spool rotations. It is provided with a micro computer-implemented function to detect when the fishing line wound onto the spool reaches a prescribed winding amount. The line length is measured by micro computer execution of a formula for line length calculation determined by the total number of spool rotations when the fishing line is wound to a prescribed winding diameter level of the spool, according to the actual number of spool rotations when the line is unwound or wound, as counted with an incremental/decremental counter. Further, when the fishing line reaches the prescribed winding amount, the prescribed winding amount detector so informs.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1992Date of Patent: August 17, 1993Assignee: Daiwa Seiko, Inc.Inventor: Kyoichi Kaneko
