  • Patent number: 4811914
Abstract: The invention pertains to a winding wheel for stacked capacitors, in the shape of a wheel body on which a rim is fixed in a detachable way, said rim having its circumference cut along a certain length and being clamped in a hoop made of a material with an expansion coefficient of zero. The cut length is calculated so that, when the rim and the hoop which clamps it are disconnected from the wheel body and carried to a determined temperature, the ends of the rim defined by the gap do not touch each other.

  • Patent number: 4709472
Abstract: In a method of manufacturing a spiral electrode assembly, a first electrode member of one polarity is covered with a separator, and the separator is extended forward beyond the leading end of the first electrode member to form an extension consisting of the separator only. This separator extension is inserted into a slot formed in a spool and is wound around the spool. After the separator extension has been wound by the length more than the length of the circumference of the spool, a second electrode member of opposite polarity is inserted in such a relation that the leading end of the first electrode member is located rear relative to that of the second electrode member. The spool is rotated to wind the two electrode members separated by the separator therearound, and the spool is then withdrawn to provide the spiral electrode assembly.

  • Patent number: 4637106
Abstract: A process for the production of laminated capacitors constituted by a stack of dielectric layers separated by metallic foils or plates, those of the even and uneven rows being respectively interconnected by lateral electrical connections. A plurality of juxtaposed master capacitors is produced on a large diameter wheel and a common intercalated layer is used between two successive stacks of master capacitors. The separation of the master capacitor stacks takes place after metal spraying 1 of the lateral edges of the group, so as to maintain the equilibrium thereof and permit the metal spraying of the other lateral edge prior to the separation of the master capacitors and optional cutting up into individual capacitors.

  • Patent number: 4633551
Abstract: In a method of continuous fabrication of mother-capacitors, a mother-film of substantial width is first metallized and cut so as to form intermediate films. A border is then formed on each intermediate film by means of a YAG-laser beam. Each intermediate film is then cut so as to form individual films by means of a CO.sub.2 -laser beam, the beam spot being located in proximity to the YAG-laser beam spot on the intermediate film. After relative displacement of the individual films, they are wound on a wheel of substantial width so as to form an array of n mother-capacitors. A single intercalary element is placed between two tiers of an assembly of m mother-capacitors, thus endowing the assembly with good stability. The two outer rings of mother-capacitors are finally cut-out after spray-coating.

  • Patent number: 4630784
Abstract: The present invention provides a process and a device for manufacturing superposed mother capacitors comprising the spiral winding of metalized films on a wheel as well as periodic interpositioning of an insert. The position of an interpositioning device is made dependent on the position of the external layer of the winding, and at least a first means is moved from a rear position to a forward position. Abstract: Multiple strands of metal slit from strip which varies in thickness from edge to center are separately coiled on the same mandrel into uniformly tight coils by selectively working the strands so as to reduce the thickness and elongate thicker strands more than thinner strands. The working is preferably accomplished by imparting reverse bends to the strands while tensioning them in amounts less than the tensile yield strength of the metal.

Abstract: A winding machine for manufacturing transformer cores includes a ribbon-dispensing assembly which travels in a predetermined path about a stationary mandrel to deposit successive layers of ribbon upon the mandrel under controlled tension while applying transverse pressure to the peripheral surface of the winding to press air from between the layers. In the preferred embodiment, a counterbalanced rotating track engages the ribbon-dispensing assembly as it travels around the mandrel. The ribbon dispensing assembly is preferably transported by a chain drive.

  • Patent number: 4488340
Abstract: An apparatus for making capaticive structures, which apparatus provides a plurality of supplies of webs, each web having a dielectric substrate with a metallic film upon one side of that substrate. The apparatus further provides a rotatable drum spaced from the supplies of webs, a plurality of rollers associated with each web supply with each web being strained and tensioned over its respective plurality of rollers, and a means for slitting the webs into ribbons prior to winding the ribbons on the drum to provide alternate layers of metallic and dielectric materials. The rollers and slitting means are positioned with respect to each other and with respect to the drum to support the ribbons over substantially their full length prior to winding on the drum.

  • Patent number: 4417701
Abstract: A method of, and means for, controlling the manufacture of a winding for an inductive apparatus, for example a transformer winding or a reactor winding, which winding is of the kind comprising a plurality of turns of a sheet composed of an electrically conductive metallic foil and an electrically insulating film on each side of the metallic foil. During the winding of the sheet, the metallic foil together with the insulating films is passed through at least one electrode device which comprises at least two rolls arranged one on each side of the sheet and having a different voltage compared with the metallic foil. At the electrode device, the insulating films are pressed with a certain pressure against the metallic foil across the entire width of the latter by means of the rolls, and the electrical insulation of both sides of the sheet is checked by separately sensing the leakage current which via each of the rolls passes through the respective insulating film.

  • Patent number: 4402784
Abstract: An improved apparatus and method are disclosed for winding into a spiral roll the positive (186) and negative (241) plates of small cylindrical batteries. The originally flat positive and negative pasted plates are conveyed through stations at which they are automatically wrapped with strips of separator material (24, 84). Then the wrapped plates are stacked in a staggered pattern and conveyed to a winding station (78). There the stack of plates is wound into a spiral roll around an arbor (332) surrounded by three driven rolls (322, 324, 326) over which a guide belt (366) is run. As the spiral roll is formed, the driven rolls move radially outwardly from the arbor under the control of a mechanism (362, 402-430) which ensures that the final roll diameter will be within desired tolerances. The outermost layer of plate wrapping material is thermally sealed (104, 105) to the roll to prevent its unwinding; and then a further mechanism (432-478) automatically ejects the completed roll from the arbor.

  • Patent number: 4384687
Abstract: In order to prevent cutting of inner windings of a film (39) wound on a pair of arbor halves (34 and 38) during sequential withdrawal of the arbor halves following a winding operation, the arbor halves are forge formed with rounded protuberant winding surfaces (51, 52 and 53). The rounded surfaces may be coated with a low friction plastic to enhance sequential arbor withdrawal without pulling the inner convolutions from the wound film plastic (39). Further, the arbor halves are provided with ends (36) bent beyond 90.degree. so that the arbor halves may force seat in holes (42) formed in holders. The arbor bent end construction will also allow an operator to strike the bent end of the arbor half in a hole to quickly remove a defective arbor to permit quick replacement with a new arbor half.

  • Patent number: RE30775
Abstract: An automatic capacitor winding machine has a retractable bifurcated arbor and vertically movable clamps to grasp the ends of the capacitor dielectric layers and carry those ends to a point below the retracted arbor. The bifurcated arbor is registered in its retracted state with its slot parallel to the dielectric layers. The arbor is then extended and grasps the dielectric layers between its tangs. The pressure grasping the dielectric layers is partially removed to allow the arbor to rotate and pull the dielectric layers from between the clamps. A stripper washer is provided to freely rotate on the arbor with limited movement parallel to the axis of the arbor and with a relatively small clearance between the washer's inside surface and the arbor's outside surface. Photoelectric means are provided to accurately detect the location of the first tab (terminal) to time the insertion of the other tabs. A reciprocating blade severs the dielectric layers after the capacitor is wound.
