  • Patent number: 6089497
Abstract: A recording device operable with continuous paper in the form of a roll includes a pair of drive rollers for selectively rotating the roll in the forward direction for paying out the paper or in the reverse direction. A controller causes the drive rollers to rotate in the reverse direction in response to a preselected signal. Bar codes representative of serial numbers are printed on one side edge of the paper. While the roll is rotated in the reverse direction, a number identification circuit reads the bar codes 41 and detects the leading edge of the paper on the basis of one bar code positioned at the leading edge and another bar code adjoining a roll position which the leading edge overlies. When the number identification circuit detects the leading edge, the controller switches the direction of rotation of the roll from reverse to forward.

  • Patent number: 6024322
Abstract: A device has a pivoted lever for detecting a near end state of a roll of paper, and the lever is held at a first position by the weight of a roll of paper, but is resiliently biased toward a second position by a spring. When the roll of paper does not have a core, and when the weight thereof falls to a predetermined value, the lever is moved from the first position to the second position due to a resilient force of the spring. When the roll of paper has a core, and when a diameter thereof is reduced to a predetermined value, the lever receives the roll of paper in a recess formed therein, and is moved from the first position to the second position due to a resilient force of the spring. When the lever is moved to the second position, this is detected by a suitable detecting element. Thus, the detector can detect the near end state of the roll of paper without regard to whether the roll of paper has a core or not.

  • Patent number: 5396313
Abstract: An end of media detection system is provided for a system which unrolls a media supply such as paper from a cylindrical core substrate. One (trailing) edge of the media is attached to the core substrate. As part of the media detection system, a shaft which is positioned within a pair of cradles supports the cylindrical core. One of the cradles houses a plastic slide, which in turn acts vertically on the actuator of a microswitch when the shaft is in place. The weight of the shaft and media roll acting on the microswitch keeps the microswitch in an inactive state, however, as the media on the roll is played out, at some point just before the media is exhausted the shaft is moved upward due to the adhesive attachment of the trail edge of the media to the core substrate. Movement of the shaft relieves the pressure on the actuator of the microswitch thereby actuating the microswitch to send a signal to a controller to stop rotation of the shaft.

Abstract: One or both of the lap rollers on which a lap roll is mounted for unwinding purposes is driven with an increasing speed during the winding-off interval so as to maintain the thickness of the lap layer constant. This, in turn, maintains the count of the sliver to be formed in the comber at a constant number. The increase in the lap roller drive can be made dependent upon the length of the lap layer which is unwound from the roll, on the mass of the lap layer delivered to the comber or on the mass of a sliver produced from the combed lap as measured at a point downstream of the comber. The speed may be increased in a stepwise manner or continuously.
