Abstract: An overend unwind system for unwinding tacky elastomeric fiber threads such as uncoated spandex thread, capturing the ballooning affect of the thread as the thread leaves the spool, applying a first-stage tension control on the thread adjacent where the thread leaves the spool, feeding the unwound thread to a nip in a downstream process, and applying a final tension increment to the thread adjacent where the thread enters the downstream process. All thread guide surfaces encountered by the thread after leaving the spool, and while the thread is under designed operating tension, are moving surfaces, such that the tensioned thread thereby experiences a reduced level of drag as the thread traverses its path of travel from the spool to the downstream process.

Abstract: A tape guide is provided for use in routing a tape media, used in a computer or other application, along a pre-specified path of travel. The tape guide is oriented along a vertical axis and comprises three sections or components joined together to form an integral guide structure. An upper section is provided with a concave surface that curves upward to a circular edge around the top of the guide. The guide also includes a cylindrical central section, and a frustoconical lower section having its smaller-diameter end contiguous with the cylindrical section. Thus, the lower section provides a tapered outer surface extending downwardly from the central section. A tape is wrapped around the guide, whereby the tape is directed along its path of travel. Abstract: A roller body receives a tape at a cylindrical surface. First and second flange members are located adjacent one and the other ends of the roller body for movement in the axial direction of the roller body, respectively. If one edge of the tape creases, the movement of the first flange member is restrained, so that a reference position can be set for the other edge of the tape in the first flange member. If the other edge of the tape creases, the movement of the second flange member is restrained, so that a reference position can be set for the one edge of the tape in the second flange member. Abstract: The printing-material web is guided in the same position and plane when the transfer cylinders are moved apart for the flying printing-plate change, so that contact between the web and the transfer cylinders and smearing are avoided, that is to say undesired contact with ink-carrying parts. When the transfer cylinders are moved apart, web-guiding elements at the web inlet and/or web outlet support the printing-material web on both sides during the plate or sleeve change by supporting elements which are narrow or act at points and can be displaced transversely with respect to the printing-material web. The printing-material web continues to be guided in the same position and plane, and smearing is avoided.

  • Patent number: 6969021
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for reducing tape media edge damage in data regions and controlling the position of the tape media in a passive manner. A curved tape guide surface of a tape guide roller controls tape media edge damage by restoring the tape media to a properly aligned position on a tape guide roller by using tape guide rollers with curved edge stops that exert a force to the tape media during a lateral shift. As the tape moves around the roller, the restoring force exerted by the curved portion of the tape guide roller on the tape during any lateral shift restores the tape to a centered position. Keeping the tape media in a centered position reduces tape edge wear, lessens degradation of the integrity of the tape and increases the useful lifetime of the tape.

Abstract: A tape guide that has textured surface over which the tape passes. The textured surface has a surface roughness exceeding the flying height of the tape above the surface. This new irregular surface topography reduces the air bearing and allows limited contact between the tape guide and the tape while minimizing tape distortion that can occur with other surface topographies.

Abstract: A tape path roller guide has a cylindrical guiding surface between two flanges. A plurality of continuous venting valleys in the guiding surface are wholly parallel to a central axis of the cylinder forming axial paddle-like surfaces generating air flow away from the cylindrical guiding surface tending to draw air from the guiding surface. Thus, a tape is allowed to stay in contact with the guiding surface. Because of the continuous venting valleys, the roller cylinder is made by molding or extrusion.

Abstract: The invention relates to a device for guiding a band-type product (1) especially a metal band, comprising at least two conical deflectors (2, 2?) arranged head to foot. Abstract: A tape drive (10) with a guide assembly (20) including a first roller (30) having a perimeter surface (56), a circumference (62), a longitudinal axis (50) and one or more of spaced apart, discontinuous grooves (32). The grooves (32) are disposed into the perimeter surface (56), with each groove (32) having a groove length (74) of less than the circumference (62) of the first roller (30), for venting air between a storage tape (26) and the first roller (30) in order to inhibit lateral tape motion and directional continuity shift. Further, the grooves (32) can be semi-randomly distributed over the perimeter surface (56), thereby decreasing the incidence of print through. Preferably, the grooves (32) of the first roller (30) are aligned substantially parallel to the circumference (62) of the first roller (30). With this design, the grooves (32) tend to inhibit the storage tape (26) from moving laterally, i.e. parallel to the longitudinal axis (50) of the first roller (30).

A stepper motor coupled to a computer system bidirectionally displaces the shuttle and cable in response to the rotation signals, outboard angular signals, inboard angular signals and limit signals to smoothly wind the cable. Error position feedback signals from the computer system create corrective displacements for the shuttle to smoothly wind cables of varying widths.
