Publication number: 20080115429Abstract: Pre-cast concrete stairs, molds for making pre-cast concrete stairs, and methods of casting pre-cast concrete stairs are provided. The stair is constructed with two beams that are cast with the stair steps as an integral monolithic structure. One of the beams (integral down edge beam) projects below the steps on one side, and the other (integral up edge beam) projects above the steps on the other side. The weight of the stairs and the weight of traffic on the steps creates compression on the tops of the integral down edge beam and integral up edge beam, and tension on the bottoms of the integral down edge beam and integral up edge beam, which enhances the combined strength of the beams. The asymmetric orientation of the members creates a stronger cross-section than if the beams were in the same plane horizontally, allowing greater load handing capability. Lightweight steps are suspended between the two beams.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 21, 2007Publication date: May 22, 2008Applicant: ZMZ PRECAST INC.Inventors: Mark E. Zirbel, Bryant A. Zavitz

Patent number: 7082725Abstract: In recent decades within the building industry, there has been a trend toward mass production of building components. The trend has included every part of structures except for the concrete slab the building is built on. The “Threshold Tray and Clip System” uses mass-produced products to be applied to construction of slabs and foundations, allowing sill steps to be built in rough openings with pre-fabricated form parts. The forms remain in the concrete and are permanent. This means that consistent results can be expected. Other mass-produced products, such as door systems, will fit into rough openings more accurately. Over-all quality of the structure will be increased.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 2003Date of Patent: August 1, 2006Inventor: James Edward Visser

Patent number: 6869553Abstract: A method of manufacturing a prefabricated precast riser module, where the required forms that are used in casting the modules are reusable and need not to be transported to the construction site. Each precast riser assembly is finished having brick facings. Brick facings are applied to the vertical surfaces of the precast riser. They are: the commonly used stretcher course and row lock course. A Rebar reinforcing rod is imbedded in the concrete mixture, which will strengthen the assembly to prevent damage when being transported on site. This added strengthening would also allow for minor misalignments during the assembly phase. These novel concrete brick faced modules can be assembled by inexperienced craftsmen, and when completed, will give the appearance of a handcrafted riser that was constructed by professional masonry craftsmen using brick and sandstone.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 2002Date of Patent: March 22, 2005Inventor: John D. Patent number: 5194165Abstract: A finishing cap for concrete formwork is described herein for providing smooth finished concrete joints and corners while reducing the time, labor, expense, and expertise required to make such a joint. The finishing cap provides two non-parallel edges forming an angle, wherein the concrete formwork is fitted into the angle so provided. The angle between the edges of the finishing cap is provided so as to be somewhat smaller than the final desired angle of the finished concrete joint. A pinching action is created between the edges of the finishing cap and the formwork, and this pinching action prevents stones and concrete from entering the joint and roughing up the final finished joint. After the concrete is poured, smoothed and set, the finishing cap may be easily removed and a smooth finished corner is produced. The invention is described in relation to concrete formwork for stairs and walls.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 1991Date of Patent: March 16, 1993Inventor: Dennis Rattigan

Patent number: 5026018Abstract: An apparatus for forming risers for concrete steps between a pair of spaced vertical walls. The apparatus takes the form of a bracket which is to connect with a length of wood such as a conventional 2.times.6. A threaded member associated with the bracket in threading movement causes the bracket to extend from the 2.times.6 to produce a clamping of the 2.times.6 in the bracket between the spaced vertical walls. As a result, a removable barrier is formed which is to contain concrete when it is poured. After sufficient drying of the concrete, the 2.times.6 and the bracket are removed from the vertical side walls leaving the now produced concrete step.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 1990Date of Patent: June 25, 1991Inventor: Harry J. Patent number: 4775131Abstract: An apparatus as disclosed for making concrete forms for making stairs. A substantially planar member has a riser end and a pivot end substantially opposite the riser end and has first and second. A pivot point rotatably fixes the pivoting end to a stringer so that the riser end can pivot with respect to the pivot end. A riser support member is mounted perpendicular to the planar member adjacent the riser end and extends to each side of the planar member. A kneeboard support may be placed on both sides of the planar member so that a kneeboard may be placed between one apparatus and a corresponding apparatus on the other side of the stairs. A scale may be provided for positioning the apparatus with respect to the stringer to facilitate mounting subsequent apparatus to a given stringer. The riser support member may be slanted to provide a constant toe-in or kickback.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1986Date of Patent: October 4, 1988Inventor: David Baumgartner

Patent number: 4635895Abstract: A spreader bracket for positioning concrete forms for concrete foundations, particularly the stem wall of a housing foundation. The spreader bracket is fabricated in the fashion of a strut to elevationally support and space an inner form member from an outer form member, the strut being fastened to the outer form member and its associated stake bracing to permit the inner form member to be properly supported above a slab bed, and to be easily removed after initial set of the concrete pour with minimal damage to the slab and stem wall.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 1985Date of Patent: January 13, 1987Inventors: Edward C. Johnson, Jr., Leroy M. Johnson, Kevin Jewison

Patent number: 4601456Abstract: An apparatus for forming concrete structures which is comprised of size variable form units that can be erected in various forms by incorporating telescopic struts, telescopic batters with fastening means including spring catch members and spring latch members that can be interengaged and disengaged easily. Two members one of which is inclined relative to the other can be connected with a connecting means including a toothed member and a spring engaging member having a toothed face. Tiles can be adhered to the molded concrete structure simultaneously with the molding.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1985Date of Patent: July 22, 1986Inventor: Shaw G. Jan

Patent number: 4444374Abstract: A concrete forms assembly for casting a concrete stair and comprising two tiers of panels of sheet material, each panel being channel shaped in cross section. Each tier of panels comprises a pair of opposite side panels and a front panel bridging ends of the side panels, and the side panels of the second tier are shorter than the side panels of the first tier so as to leave an exposed space to define a first or intermediate step of the stair. Clips are swingably disposed on the upper flange of each of the side panels in the lower tier to engage with the lower flanges of the front panel in the second tier, and hooks are carried by the upper flanges of each of the side panels for connecting the upper flanges of the front panels to the front panels in the respective tiers.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1982Date of Patent: April 24, 1984Inventor: Selmer E. Patent number: 4365780Abstract: The present device is especially useful for positioning on forms prior to the pouring of concrete for removal therefrom to create holes in the concrete to receive inserts therein such as in making holes in concrete for steps to be used in a manhole. A tapered steel shaft of any selected length has a collar fixed near one end thereof with an elongated handle passing transversely therethrough. The collar has slanted cam edges on each end providing a cam surface which is approximately 12.degree. from a line perpendicular to the axis. A second collar identical to the first is welded to a form, such as a steel concrete form used in pouring concrete for manholes. The second collar also has slanted cam edges providing a cam surface corresponding to the slanted cam edges on the first collar and there is a hole passing through the steel pin and through the second collar to receive a removable latch pin therein.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 1981Date of Patent: December 28, 1982Assignee: M.
