  • Patent number: 9085102
Abstract: An object is formed on a component with a positive flash shut-off during insert molding operations. The mold has a base with a cavity and a port that delivers a liquid to the cavity. The base has a component support structure for supporting the component and pockets formed on opposite sides of the cavity. The pockets are slightly spaced apart from the cavity by thin partitions. Inserts located in the pockets and are formed from a polymer. Both the partitions and inserts comprise the component support structure. The inserts have a dimension that is smaller than that of the base and partitions so as to form a compression fit around the component to reduce or eliminate flash down the component during the molding process.

A breaking core can be incorporated as a part of the lower end of the pipe or it can be formed as a separate member. The pipe can be used only to feed additional molten metal into the mold as the poured metal starts to solidify or it can be used both to pour the molten metal into the mold cavity and then to provide the additional feed as the metal solidifies.

  • Patent number: 4050668
Abstract: The use of hot tops on ingot and similar molds in which steel, steel alloys and other molten metal are teemed and cooled to a solid state is avoided and the use of topping compounds in such operations eliminated or substantially reduced by the provision of a removable and reusable cover covering the top of the mold cavity wherein the cover comprises elements combined into a single unit arranged to be set atop the mold and completely cover the metal, at least one of said elements having a heat-reflecting surface over the undersurface thereof for reflecting heat downwardly onto the metal in the mold to retard the cooling of the metal while the space or spaces between the elements provide insulation.

  • Patent number: 4025047
Abstract: A moulding for the heat retention of feeder head top surface in casting molten metals is based on a mixture consisting of charcoal and a binder, and said charcoal is laminated with directional properties in the laterial direction. If circumstances require, the moulding may contain at least one component selected from the group consisting of thermo-expansible materials, organic binders and organic fibrous materials, and further when occasion demands it may be coated with a shell containing fibrous materials and a binder.

  • Patent number: 4005846
Abstract: An improved ingot mold base member comprising a cast iron base with a refractory insert disposed within its face. The refractory insert is positioned within a cavity in the cast iron base and attached with Z-shaped anchors, said anchors contacting a groove in the side of the insert and fastened to the bottom of the cavity. A space between the edge of the refractory insert and the edge of the cavity is filled with a plastic refractory.

  • Patent number: 3995677
Abstract: An ingot mold has been devised which instead of utilizing a full protective thickness or section of sand within the spacing between a metal core bar and a metal flask, employs a refractory lining for the flask and a refractory coat for the bar that respectively have a cross extent or thickness that occupies a greater portion of the spacing than the casting sand. The casting sand is utilized as a minimum inner thickness to define the casting mold and as imposed between the refractory lining and coat.

  • Patent number: 3971117
Abstract: A method for repairing eroded bottoms of ingot molds by forming a casting space in the bottom of the mold at the point of erosion, the casting space having an hour-glass type shape, placing the ingot mold on a molding platform so as to close off the bottom of the casting space with a refractory material, placing a protective layer of a compactable refractory material about the interior of the mold and introducing to the casting space an alumino-thermic material and then igniting said alumino-thermic material such that the weld metal from the reaction thereof completely fills the casting space. Methods for repairing the bottoms of closed bottom as well as plug bottom molds are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 3955265
Abstract: A method of securing a patch of resilient material to a surface, in which method the patch is applied to the surface so as to form a curved clearance between itself and the surface, pressure is applied to press the central region of the patch against the surface, and the edges of the patch are subsequently secured to the surface. Also provided is an apparatus for carrying out the method, which apparatus includes a fluid pressure ram and means for supporting this in relation to the surface to enable the pressure to be applied to the patch. Means are provided for securing the terminal portions of the patch to the surface during application of pressure by the ram.

  • Patent number: 3941347
Abstract: A composite pallet for forming the lower end of a concrete pipe cast in a vertical position includes a concrete base having an annular portion shaped to form the end of the pipe. An outer annular steel ring is bonded to the base around the outer periphery of the annular portion of the concrete base, and an inner annular steel ring is bonded to the base around the inner periphery of the annular portion. The two rings are more chip-resistant than the concrete base. The outer ring is shaped to receive one end of an outer cylindrical form, and the inner ring is shaped to receive one end of an inner cylindrical form so that an annular cavity is formed between the two cylindrical forms for casting the concrete pipe.
