  • Patent number: 9044541
Abstract: A medical device is disclosed comprising a diaphragm having at least one slit valve disposed therein, and a valve housing configured to secure the diaphragm at a peripheral portion of the diaphragm, wherein a central portion of the diaphragm is positioned relative to the peripheral portion of the diaphragm such that compressive forces acting on the peripheral portion of the diaphragm create moment forces which bias the slit valve in a closed position. A method is disclosed for using the device in connection with a catheter for regulation of fluids to and from a patient.

  • Patent number: 8757591
Abstract: A drain plug has a stud that has a head and a shaft joined to the head. A resilient swell sleeve is frictionally mounted on the shaft and is sized to fit within a drainage hole. First and second cams are mounted on the shaft. The first cam abuts the swell sleeve and does not rotate with the shaft. The second cam rotates with the shaft. Rotating the stud in a first direction causes the first and second cams to engage each other so as to produce an axial force that causes the swell sleeve to swell so as to create a seal between the swell sleeve and the drainage hole. Rotating the stud in a second direction terminates the axial force thereby allowing the swell sleeve to return to its normal shape so that the drain plug can be loosened from the drainage hole.

Abstract: A shear valve utilizing an elastically responsive unibody seal member in operation. The unibody seal member is of unitary constriction and in terms of adjacent ends thereof and an energizing member disposed therebetween. Thus, governing of fluid flow through the metal valve may be achieved without undue concern over high pressure differentials, for example in a downhole environment. Further, the unitary construction of the seal member alleviates concern over mismatching tolerances and/or dimensions for separately assembled miniaturized components of the valve.

  • Patent number: 4650158
Abstract: An improved beverage-making device, particularly useful for brewing coffee, provides a safety thermostat arrangement for quickly detecting excessive temperatures of a hot water container generally near a heating element arranged therein. A running thermostat provides a self-supporting sensing tube means in cooperation with a capillary tube and thermostat which detect the mean temperature of the hot water and are responsive to a narrow range of temperature variations within the hot water container. The improvement further includes a tap-off hot water system which provides hot water separately and independently of the brewing water heated in said container. The system is connected upstream of the cold water inlet valve of the device and directs cold water into a water coil means residing within the hot water container. Outlet pipe means convey heated water from the coil to an outlet faucet projecting exteriorly of the device.
