Patent number: 4947886Abstract: A flow control device, such as a valve, has a body with two portions which define two valve chambers, an inlet, which is coupled to a source of pressurized fluid and which opens into one of the valve chambers, and an outlet coupled to downstream devices, such as sprinkler heads, and which opens into the other valve chamber. A piece of collapsible tubing couples the two valve chambers. A shaft extends into the valve and is provided with a mechanism for pinching the collapsible tubing shut which causes the collapsible tubing to collapse due to the pressure exerted on its exterior by the pressurized fluid surrounding it. A coil spring is attached to the shaft and the valve body. When the valve is closed, i.e., the collapsible tubing collapsed, the coil spring is biased to cause the shaft to rotate if released. The shaft is prevented from rotating by a fusible link. When the temperature to which the valve is exposed reaches or exceeds a predetermined temperature, the fusible link melts.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 1989Date of Patent: August 14, 1990Assignee: Remote Controls, Inc.Inventor: Lee A. Patent number: 4691736Abstract: A pressure-driven fire-suppression valve wherein a single electrical switch is mechanically actuated by coaxially related first and second sealed piston components, which are compliantly loaded in the direction away from switch actuation. The first piston component is of lesser area and has its switch-actuating relation via abutment with the second (larger-area) piston component; this first piston component continuously responds to suppressant-charge pressure, via a pressure-fluid connection to the upstream valve chamber, i.e., to the upstream side of the closed position of the valve member (poppet). As long as this upstream-sensed pressure is above predetermined threshold, the compliant-load force will be overcome, and the switch will be mechanically actuated, but upon leakage below threshold, the mechanical actuation is released, for a change of state at the switch.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 1986Date of Patent: September 8, 1987Assignee: Marotta Scientific Controls, Inc.Inventor: Slawomir Kowalski

Patent number: 4460007Abstract: In a freeze protection valve, a wax actuator is situated in a heat-conductive housing to which heat is conducted from the liquid system being protected. The housing prevents the actuator from triggering the valve to its opened condition while the liquid system is hot, but permits a rapid response when the liquid system is cool. In a snap-action freeze protection valve, the actuator is carried by the valve stem, and heat is conducted from the valve body to the valve stem through a sleeve through which the valve stem slides. The actuator moves a cam within the valve stem which operates a ball-type latch. The latch holds the valve in the closed position until the actuator releases the latch. Also disclosed is a remote-controlled valve operating mechanism which uses an electrically heated wax actuator to effect valve closure.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 1983Date of Patent: July 17, 1984Inventor: Fred L. Pirkle

Patent number: 4438777Abstract: A freeze protection valve can be reset under cold ambient conditions without the need for artificial heating of the valve's temperature sensor. An auxiliary latch is used to hold the valve element closed. The auxiliary latch is automatically released as the primary latching mechanism of the valve becomes operative upon an increase in temperature of the liquid system served by the valve. Release of the auxiliary latch is effected by virtue of a small downward movement of the valve stem resulting from a camming action inherent in the operation of the valve's primary latch. In one version of the valve, a simple, drop-away key temporarily holds the valve stem down until the primary latch becomes operative. In another version, the valve stem is reset remotely through a bowden wire, and the resetting mechanism automatically engages an auxiliary latch.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 1983Date of Patent: March 27, 1984Inventor: Fred L. The gear connection between the driven member and the poles is disengageable by manual means and readily adjustable to provide a coarse setting of the relative angular positions of the driver and poles, and the extension of the fingers from the poles is continuously adjustable to provide a fine setting. The ratio of the gears is such that the poles turn faster than the driver. This multiplies the motion of the fingers and hence provides greater accuracy in the operation of the switches.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 1978Date of Patent: October 16, 1979Inventor: Lynn T.
