  • Patent number: 5527843
Abstract: A blood separating composition for use in blood collection tubes, the composition having an absolute viscosity of 100,000-320,000 cP at 25.degree. C. at a shear rate of 1 sec.sup.-1 when the blood separating composition turns into its dynamic state from its stationary state, with a reduced viscosity of 50,000 cP or more at a shear rate of 10 sec.sup.-1 in the dynamic state. The absolute viscosity of said composition is 100,000-300,000 cP at the shear rate of 1 sec.sup.-1 when returning to the stationary state. Such a viscosity renders stable and less flowable and blood separating composition during storage, allowing it to form a stable partition barrier in each collection tube when centrifuged to separate the blood phases one from another, with the blood cells above the barrier being prevented from remaining within the serum. The blood separating composition does not release any harmful oily substance or the like.

Abstract: A serum:plasma separator is provided containing a tackifier having a softening point of 70.degree. to 150.degree. C. and a partition-forming material. The separator prevents hemocyte from remaining in a serum portion after blood separation and prevents migration of a component having a concentration gradient between clot and serum, even when separated blood components are stored as they are in place in a tube for the separation of blood, whereby correct examination results can be obtained. The serum:plasma separator hardly undergoes a form change at room temperature and under heat and hardly shows a viscosity change even after a long period of time. Further, the serum:plasma separator has an excellent thixotropic nature free from a change in temperature, excellent cohesion and excellent adhesion to a blood separation tube. There is also provided a tube for the separation of serum:plasma from clot;hemocyte, which contains the above serum:plasma separator.

  • Patent number: 5348160
Abstract: Fine particle coal is beneficiated in specially designed dense medium cyclones to improve particle acceleration and enhance separation efficiency. Raw coal feed is first sized to remove fine coal particles. The coarse fraction is then separated into clean coal, middlings, and refuse. Middlings are comminuted for beneficiation with the fine fraction. The fine fraction is deslimed in a countercurrent cyclone circuit and then separated as multiple fractions of different size specifications in dense medium cyclones. The dense medium contains ultra-fine magnetite particles of a narrow size distribution which aid separation and improves magnetite recovery. Magnetite is recovered from each separated fraction independently, with non-magnetic effluent water from one fraction diluting feed to a smaller-size fraction, and improving both overall coal and magnetite recovery.

  • Patent number: 4770779
Abstract: An apparatus for separating blood is provided with a closed end and a thixotropic gel-like sealant with a specific gravity intermediate between the gravities of serum and clot phases. A cavity is formed on the upper surface of said sealant. The sealant consists essentially of an .alpha.-olefin-dimaleate copolymer having a viscosity from 10,000 to 120,000 c.p. (25.degree. C.), to which a viscosity-specific gravity adjusting agent is added to adjust the specific gravity to 1.035-1.055. The cavity is formed in such a size that diameter of the upper surface is from 0.15 to 0.7 times the inner diameter of the apparatus and its depth is from 0.13 to 0.65 times the thickness of said sealant.

  • Patent number: 4578525
Abstract: A process is presented for extracting polar organic compounds, in particular lower aliphatic alcohols, out of their aqueous solutions, which is based on the use of fluids which contain a significant amount of polyoxaalkanols, polyoxaalkanediols and/or polyoxaalkanepolyols. These compounds, by virtue of their high molar masses, their low solubility in water and their good affinity for polar organic compounds, are particularly suitable for use as extractants.

  • Patent number: 4557718
Abstract: The separation of dissolved and/or undissolved materials having different densities or different buoyancy densities can be effected with the aid of agents comprising solutions of true metatungstates. In the case of a separation of materials having different buoyancy densities by means of a density gradient centrifugation, the agent has the form of an aqueous solution of an alkali, ammonium or alkaline earth metal metatungstate and, if desired, may be augmented by the addition of at least one low molecular weight electrolyte. The agent can have a density of up to 3.1 g.cm.sup.-3, has a low viscosity at high concentrations, and is neutral and chemically insert. In the case of a separation of water-insoluble solid mixtures of different densities, the densities of the solutions of the true metatungstates can be increased up to 4.6 g.cm.sup.-3 by adding to the solutions high density materials such as sodium tungstate or tungsten carbide of suitable grain size so as to form a suspension.
