Patent number: 4582299Abstract: A marine winch has a winch drum which is totally closed at the top, mounted on a base housing in bearings so as to rotate relative thereto on a vertical axis. The winch drum is driven in a given direction by pulling on a cord which is wound around a self-recoiling pulley in the base housing to thereby rotate the pulley and associated ratchet or clutch means and pinion gear which drives a gear ring on the winch drum. A sprag clutch is operatively connected between the winch and the base housing to prevent rotation of the winch drum in a direction opposite the given direction and to transmit load torque applied to the winch drum to a gear plate to automatically change gear ratios. An infinitely variable hydraulic drive means is also described.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1984Date of Patent: April 15, 1986Inventor: Ian A. Royle

Patent number: 4566674Abstract: A winch has a drum and drum gear attached thereto. The drum gear is driven by a pinion gear that is attached to an operating shaft which in turn, is attached to an operating handle. The drum side adjacent the drum gear has a plurality of notches which allows the pinion gear to axially slide therethrough to disengage the pinion gear from the drum gear whereby paying out of the rope can be done without spinning of the pinion gear or the operating handle. The pinion gear can remesh with the driving gear by passing through the notch toward its operating position.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 1984Date of Patent: January 28, 1986Assignee: Fulton Manufacturing CorporationInventors: Edward Ebey, Karl E. Patent number: 4545567Abstract: A winch is powered by a motor mounted at one end of a drum through a three-stage planetary drive train disposed adjacent the opposite end of the drum. The motor includes a first drive shaft which extends axially into the interior of the drum. The drive train includes a second drive shaft which extends axially into the interior of the drum toward the motor. A brake-clutch assembly is disposed within the interior of the drum and operably interconnects the first drive shaft and the second drive shaft. The brake-clutch assembly operates automatically in response to the direction of the torque being transmitted between the first drive shaft and the second drive shaft. In operation, the brake-clutch assembly permits the second drive shaft to rotate relative to and power the drum to reel in the load on the cable and then frictionally locks the second drive shaft to the inside diameter of the drum to hold the load on the cable when the motor is stopped.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1984Date of Patent: October 8, 1985Assignee: Warn Industries, Inc.Inventors: Thomas M. Patent number: 4489308Abstract: A system for identifying emergency exits in a building includes a strobe light which is tethered at an elevated location with respect to the floor of the building. The strobe light is normally held at the elevated position by an electromagnet, which electromagnet is kept energized as long as a smoke detector connected thereto does not sense a dangerous level of smoke. As soon as the smoke detector detects smoke above a certain threshold level, the electromagnet is deenergized and the strobe light drops to a position suspended just above the floor. The strobe light includes its own battery source which is connected to the strobe light by a switch which closes when the strobe light is dropped. An electric motor is provided to rewind the tether when the smoke detector no longer indicates an emergency situation. By tethering the strobe light, the light can be dropped beneath the smoke level in the building, allowing people crawling along the floor to determine the location of emergency exits.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 1983Date of Patent: December 18, 1984Inventors: Emanuel L. Patent number: 4461460Abstract: A winch (10) is powdered by a motor (20) mounted at one end of a drum (12) through a three-stage planetary drive train (26) disposed adjacent the opposite end of the drum (12 ). The drive train (26) includes elongate drive shaft (25) which extends longitudinally through the interior of the drum (12) toward the motor (20). A brake-clutch assembly (24), disposed within the interior of the drum (12) operably interconnects motor (20) and drive shaft (25). The brake-clutch assembly (24) automatically operates in response to the magnitude and direction of the torque being transmitted between motor (20) and drive shaft (25). In operation, the brake-clutch assembly (24) permits the drive shaft (25) to rotate relative to and power the drum (12) to reel in the loaded drum cable and then frictionally locks the drive shaft (25) to the inside diameter of the drum (12) to hold the load on the drum cable when motor (20 ) is stopped.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1982Date of Patent: July 24, 1984Assignee: Warn Industries, Inc.Inventor: Thomas M. Patent number: 4452429Abstract: There is disclosed a planetary gear winch comprising a selectively operable freewheel arrangement therefor. The freewheel arrangement of the invention provides the winch operator with the ability to disengage the winch drum from the planetary gear reduction drive train, under no-load conditions, thereby to allow freewheeling rotation of the winch drum and rapid unwinding of line therefrom.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1981Date of Patent: June 5, 1984Assignee: Rule Industries, Inc.Inventor: Dan C. Patent number: 4440041Abstract: A winch apparatus (8) with a shift control mechanism (10) is disclosed for axially positioning a shaft (66) and effecting low and high speed raising of a load on a winch drum (24) and a centered neutral condition. The winch apparatus (8) advantageously includes first and second piston members (99,100) disposed within a housing (42) and mounted on the shaft (66), first means (122) for fluidically urging the first piston member (99) and the shaft (66) to a first position, second means (124) for fluidically urging the second piston member (100) and the shaft (66) to an opposite position, and centering means (126) for mechanically positioning the shaft (66) therebetween. Easier assembly of the winch apparatus (8) is featured.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1981Date of Patent: April 3, 1984Assignee: Caterpillar Tractor Co.Inventor: Randall R. Bendtsen

Patent number: 4420144Abstract: A hand hoist or pulling apparatus including a drive clutch assembly, and a drive shaft and transmission gears associated with the assembly for pulling a chain on a load sheave by oscillating a lever. A holding member and a stop lever for preventing the member from movement are provided to hold a pinion on one end of the drive shaft in meshing engagement with the transmission gears and also to hold the pinion disengaged therefrom when the drive shaft is shifted. The holding member is held stationary against rotation, mounted on the clutch assembly and restrained from axial movement by the stop lever which is biased by a spring and pivotally mounted on a side plate.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 1981Date of Patent: December 13, 1983Assignee: Vital Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Koji Nishimura

Patent number: RE30881Abstract: A manually powered multi-speed winch has an automatic drive disengagement upon drive reversal which is provided by an axially movable member in one drive train which in a first axial position is engageable for drive transmission through a pawl and ratchet unidirectional drive means. The drive means in its drive-transmitting condition prevents movement of the member away from that first position. Upon drive reversal the unidirectional drive means is ineffective either to transmit drive or to maintain the member in its first position and it moves axially to a second position in which the drive means are disengaged. The member is biased towards that second axial position but is manually movable to the first by a control button accessible at the outside of the winch. The button may be lockable to override the automatic disengagement.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 1980Date of Patent: March 16, 1982Assignee: Lewmar Marine LimitedInventors: Richard D. J.
