  • Patent number: 5553832
Abstract: An air balancing hoist is described having an axially movable drum reel supported on a ball nut and screw with a piston defining a pressure chamber containing regulated air pressure acting on one end of the drum reel to counter the unwinding force of a load supported on a cable wound on the drum reel. A centrifugal brake retards drum rotation when there is a sudden release of the load tending to cause too rapid wind up of the cable by the regulated air pressure applied on the piston.

  • Patent number: 5522581
Abstract: A pneumatically operated balancing hoist includes a housing forming a chamber therein and an inlet for communicating with the chamber. Slidably positioned in the housing is a piston. A rotating cable drum moves longitudinally within the housing with the piston. The rotating cable drum contains one or more longitudinal openings. When the rotating cable drum is moved longitudinally, rod mechanisms slidably and longitudinally engage the cable drum through one or more longitudinal openings, causing a flywheel located at one end of the housing to rotate. When the rotation of the cable drum exceeds a predetermined speed, one or more brake shoes pivotably mounted to the flywheel will move outwardly to contact a braking surface located on the interior of the housing to stop the rotation of the cable drum.

  • Patent number: 5458250
Abstract: A buoyant crane is disclosed which moves loads that are entirely out of a liquid body such as water, in response to buoyant forces acting on an expandable and contractible chamber located in the liquid body. Buoyant forces acting on the chamber are produced in relation to the volume of the chamber. The chamber is movably supported in the liquid body so that it may rise and sink in accordance with buoyant forces acting on the chamber responsive to changes in the volume of the chamber. A compressed gas source supplies compressed gas (e.g., air) to the chamber to selectively change its volume. A rope and pulley system couples the chamber to a load for moving the load, which is entirely out of the liquid body, in response to movement of the chamber within the liquid body in turn responsive to the buoyant forces acting on the chamber.

  • Patent number: 5083723
Abstract: A reeling control system and an air driven tow reel machine incorporating such a control system are disclosed. In the disclosed control system and reeling machine of the present invention, towline velocity is monitored and reel-in and reel-out operations are regulated according to a programmed towline velocity profile. A position sensor senses the position of the turbine vent doors and a velocity sensor device provides the instantaneous towline velocity. A velocity comparator compares the instantaneous towline velocity with a desired velocity value from a desired velocity profile. Based upon the difference between actual and desired towline velocities, a door control device generates a driving signal for controlling the vent door position accordingly.

  • Patent number: 4770368
Abstract: A turbine/air vent reeling machine for use in aerial towed target applications and the like disclosed characterized by use of a novel turbine head/air vent design which extracts ram air energy from the wind stream impinging upon a moving aircraft for the purpose of driving and braking the reeling machine for pay-in and pay-out of a towed target. Control of the turbine rotational speed is achieved through plural variable opening vents located aft of the turbine head which are driven through an open and closed orientation by a servo-motor to throttle the air mass flow through the turbine head. Turbine speed is sensed by a tachometer which is coupled to a shaft driven by the turbine. The tachometer output voltage is introduced into a closed loop control circuit including processing electronics which compares the tachometer voltage to a pre-selected set point voltage corresponding to the desired rotational speed of the turbine.

  • Patent number: 4566675
Abstract: A control device for an air hoist drives an air motor rotated by an air supply. The air hoist lifts or lowers a load by rotating a chain wheel. When the chain wheel rotates to lower the load, a small amount of air is supplied to the air motor in order to drive it in the normal lifting direction so that the braking force generated by the motor may reduce the load lowering speed and may gradually lower the load utilizing its own weight. Also, a mechanism for restraining the rotation in the normal lifting direction, when the chain wheel is under slow speed control, is actuated to restrain the rotation of the air motor, thereby stopping the chain wheel in a safe and sure manner without using a mechanical brake.
