Abstract: A power or manually operated winch mechanism for handling the running rigging lines of a sailing yacht. The winch includes a winding drum, which winds and stores the line during line retrieving operations and controllably releases the line when desired. The new winch, while intended to be driven by on-board electric or hydraulic power, includes a novel mechanism, actuated by a conventional winch handle, for converting the winch to a multi-speed manual operating mode in the event of failure of the on-board power system. A clutch mechanism enables controlled release of line from the winding drum during manual operation, and enables adjustments and emergency release operation when operating in a power mode. Novel level wind features enable the lines to be appropriately tensioned during retrieval, and positively drawn from the drum when the line is not under load. The hoisting line is a rope, which comprises synthetic fiber material, e.g. a high-tech rope. Hereby it is achieved that the hoisting device can be provided in a compact form, compared with traditionally used hoisting means, since the synthetic rope used as a hoisting line is characterized in having a high tensile strength and a low weight, whereby a rope having a comparable low weight can be used for lifting the same load, for which traditionally a steel wire having a relatively large weight has been used. Further, since the weight of the rope itself is relatively small, a drive motor, gear etc. having reduced capacity, power etc., can be used as compared to a traditional hoist, thereby also aiding in reducing the size, weight, complexity, cost etc. of the hoisting device.

  • Patent number: 6443431
Abstract: A cable winding system has a powered spool for receiving the cable in continuous evenly distributed coils. A levelwind mechanism is attached to the spool and guides the cable onto the spool by a pawl traversing a powered diamond screw groove. The levelwind is attached to a load compensated hydraulic system which prevents stresses from being transmitted to the pawl. The levelwind has a sheave to accept cable angularly disposed to the axis of the spool.

  • Patent number: 6095501
Abstract: An apparatus for a derrick, comprising two or more hydraulic piston-cylinder arrangements (10, 11) for raising and lowering a yoke (8) which travels on guide rails (7) in the derrick (1) itself, where two or more wire lines (13) are strung over sheaves (12) rotatably attached to the yoke. The wire lines (13) are attached at one end thereof to the top drive (9) and at the other end thereof are secured to an attachment point (14a, 14b) adjacent to a drill floor (2), said two or more wire lines being run in two sets (13a, 13b) of lines. The attachment points (14a, 14b) for each wire set are connected to a tension equalizer assembly to equalize differences in tension in the wire lines.

  • Patent number: 6032929
Abstract: A hydraulically-operated hoist is disclosed. The hoist includes a plurality of hydraulic piston/cylinder arrangements, each having an upper end. Two guide rails are disposed in parallel with the hydraulic piston/cylinder arrangements. A self-aligning yoke is connected between the upper ends of the hydraulic piston/cylinder arrangements and is raised and lowered along the two guide rails by the hydraulic piston/cylinder arrangements. The yoke comprises a beam with the two ends. An arm is connected to each end of the beam, extends obliquely upward from the beam, and terminates in a remote end rotatably connected to the upper ends of the hydraulic piston/cylinder arrangements. At least two sheaves are rotatably connected to the beam, each of which are capable of running its own wire line.

  • Patent number: 5816565
Abstract: A lifting apparatus for lifting a heavy object. The lifting apparatus including a frame assembly having a pair of side beams spaced parallel to one another. A sliding sheave assembly is mounted to the frame assembly. The sliding sheave assembly is positioned between the pair of side beams. The sliding sheave assembly has a first shaft with a plurality of first sheaves mounted thereto and a second shaft with a plurality of second sheaves mounted thereto. The first and second shafts are separated by a distance which can be varied. A cylinder has a first end connected to the frame assembly and a rod end attached to the sliding sheave assembly. The cylinder rod end is capable of moving longitudinally relative to the first end to thereby alter the distance between the first and second shafts. A cable having first and second ends attached to the frame assembly is reeved between the pluralities of first and second sheaves.

  • Patent number: 5632470
Abstract: A wire fencing tensioning apparatus comprising a generally rectangular shaped open frame carriage mounted on a standard three-way hitch on the rear of a tractor. The generally rectangular shaped open frame carriage comprises a plurality of corresponding parallel members joined at ends to form corners, which members and corners define the generally rectangular shaped open frame carriage. The wire fencing tensioning apparatus has a pair of extending hydraulic cylinders. Each of the extending hydraulic cylinders has a pulley attached to the top of the extending portion or piston thereof through each of which pulley a cable is strung. The wire fencing tensioning apparatus has a hydraulic control, the hydraulic control being capable of independently controlling each of extending hydraulic cylinders. The wire fencing tensioning apparatus has a pair of pulley-cable systems by which tension is supplied to "stretch" the wire.

  • Patent number: 5518477
Abstract: A cable and pulley system for a multi-station exercise machine involving a tensioned cable led over a series of pulleys, at least one of which is a cradled pulley normally nested in a cradle and radially held in the cradle by the force of the tension on the tensioned cable and radially movable out of the cradle by a greater force applied to the cradled pulley by a second pull cable mechanically connected to the cradled pulley and functioning to move the cradled pulley radially out of its cradle when sufficient tensional force is applied to the second cable to overcome the tension applied to the cradled pulley by the tensioned cable. Additional exercise stations can be added to operate with additional cables and cradled pulleys without changing the manner of operation of other cables and exercise stations.

  • Patent number: 5201628
Abstract: A manual powered hoist and ramp system for pickup trucks enables a single person to lift heavy objects located on handtrucks or dollies onto the loading platform of the truck. The truck tailgate has a pivoted flap extension to form a ramp inclined from the truck loading platform to the ground when pivoted into its opened ramp position with the flap extended. An accompanying hoist has a counterforce mechanism mounted on a pair of elevated stanchion posts on opposite sides of the truck loading platform for producing an upward assisting lifting force establishing tension in a line extending to the ground for attachment to a handtruck or dolly. That force directed substantially parallel to the ramp tending to move the load up the ramp thus enables a single person to handle a heavier load, such as a refrigerator, for hoisting onto the truck platform.

  • Patent number: 4919393
Abstract: Fixed and traveling cable blocks with first and second cable grip assemblies are supported adjacent the load to be lifted or lowered. A lifting/lowering cable is threaded through the cable grip assemblies before being secured to the load while a separate cable suspends the traveling block from the fixed block. By alternately closing one cable grip and opening the other, the load becomes movable upon the movement of the traveling block. Additionally, by closing the previously opened cable grip and opening the previously closed cable grip, the traveling block may be re-positioned or re-cycled while the load remains stationary. Upon such re-positioning, the lowreing/lifting operation of the load can be repeated.
