  • Patent number: 6554754
Abstract: An improved bowed roll assembly and system that can be adjusted during operation to alter critical speeds to outside the range of the operational speed of the assembly, and methods of altering critical speeds of the roll assembly during its operation to inhibit harmonic vibration are provided. In one embodiment, the bowed roll assembly system includes a programmable logic controller (PLC) and accelerometer, and the critical speeds of the roll assembly are “learned” by the PLC which triggers changes to the pressure of the pressure applying member of the assembly to alter the roll's stiffness and the critical speeds.

  • Patent number: 6488230
Abstract: Bowed spreader apparatus for laterally stretching, or stressing, a web of material carried in a selected direction along a conveyor path includes an elongate stationary spreader bar extending laterally of the path. The spreader bar has a web support face which is convexly curved both about the longitudinal axis of the bar and along the longitudinal axis. The bar includes a formed elongate support body having a degree of flexibility allowing the body to be bent in a bowed configuration. A face surface of the body is formed in a convex curve about the longitudinal axis of the body and a plurality of hardened elements are individually secured to and cover the face surface of the support body. An underlying interchangeable profiling support having a convexly curved upper surface forms the spreader bar into a selected bowed configuration.

  • Patent number: 5791030
Abstract: A relatively inexpensive web widening apparatus which is suitable for the manufacture of a widened web having a large width and a lightweight web while maintaining a high widening ratio and the uniformity of the web and can be operated with ease at a high efficiency comprises a widening tool in contact with the web, having first and second groups of widening plates arranged in a width direction of the web to face each other, at least one pair of cross guiders which can nip both side end portions of the web, and guide means for moving the widening plates of the first and second groups in such a manner that the interval between the widening plates expands gradually as they rotate and then narrows gradually.

  • Patent number: 5729878
Abstract: A web spreading apparatus for transversely spreading a web, such as a split web formed of a longitudinally uniaxially stretched film, includes a spreading means arranged in a travelling path of the web for transversely spreading the web. The spreading means comprises a curved rod-like member and projections arranged generally circumferentially about an axis of the curved rod-like member. The curved rod-like member is arranged so that the concave side is directed forward and the convex side is directed rearward, in the web travelling direction, and the projections are rotatable about the axis of the curved rod-like member at a speed higher than the travelling speed of the web. In one aspect, the curved rod-like member comprises a curved shaft and an outer tube arranged about the curved shaft and rotatable relative to the curved shaft, the projections being formed between the grooves cut on the outer tube. In another aspect, the projections are formed of a spring arranged about the curved rod-like member.

  • Patent number: 5547449
Abstract: A flexible roll for applying pressure to a substrate comprising a center rod extending between two end journals, and a wound helical coil attached to such journals with a diametric spacing from the center rod so that the coil will assume a convex bowed configuration and contact the center rod at the middle portion thereof.

  • Patent number: 4566154
Abstract: A web spreading apparatus that includes a set of spreader rolls spaced from each other in the machine direction of web formation with the axles of the rolls extending generally in the cross-machine direction of web formation. The set of spreader rolls includes a first upstream group of curved rolls and a second downstream group of rolls. Each roll in the downstream group has a central region having less curvature than the end regions joining the central region.

  • Patent number: 4245675
Abstract: In a weaving loom having a frame and a take-up roller spanned between first and second spaced sections of the frame to wind thereon a fabric, a resilient rod is spanned between the first and second spaced sections to cross the fabric at a position upstream of the take-up roller while being in slidable contact with the fabric, and camber producing means is arranged to flex the resilient rod to produce a camber which protrudes towards the fabric pressing same and is changeable in shape in response to the degree of a biasing force applied to the resilient rod. Thus, the desired form of the camber appropriate for neat winding of the fabric on the take-up roller is easily provided by an operator.
