Abstract: The invention relates to an artificial turf, comprising a backing and a number of artificial grass blades connected to the backing and extending transversely of the surface thereof, which artificial grass blades have an irregular, in particular a locally narrowed, cross-section. Owing to this locally narrowed cross-section in the vicinity of the free end thereof, these artificial grass blades greatly resemble natural blades of grass and also display similar behavior. The invention also relates to a method for forming such an artificial turf and to a device with which this method can be performed. The narrowed cross-section can herein be formed by stretching the artificial grass blades, wherein the artificial grass blades can be plasticized before, during and/or after the stretching, for instance by local heating thereof.
Abstract: A pneumatically operated pile carpet trimmer includes a housing having a drive shaft projecting from one end thereof, and a shearing head removably threaded on the last-named end to surround the projecting end of the shaft. An operating lever which is pivotally mounted in the head is connected at one end to the movable shearing member of a set of shears which is removably mounted on the bottom of the head, and the opposite end of the lever is releasably connected to an eccentric carried by the drive shaft. When the latter rotates it oscillates the lever, which therefore reciprocates the movable shearing member. The head may have two sets of shears removably mounted thereon to operate in intersecting planes. In each case exhaust air from the housing is directed onto the shears to blow away cuttings.
Abstract: A reciprocating web cutting knife which employs a fixed rotary knife blade which is indexed upon each full reciprocation of the knife carriage. A ratchet and pawl arrangement cooperates with a ratchet wheel mounted on the knife to index the knife.
Abstract: A slitting apparatus for separating face-to-face pile fabrics, double plush ware or the like, into two separate panels includes a closed loop feedback arrangement that maintains equal tension on both panels thereby permitting the cutting knife to sever the double plush ware exactly in the center thereof reducing panel rejects. The feedback arrangement is of the analog type thereby insuring almost instantaneous and continuous control of the tension of both panels.
Abstract: A pile fabric, especially velvet, can have a selection of yarn strands appearing on one of its faces severed by means of a focused laser beam. According to the process of the invention the zone of focus of the laser beam is brought successively into contact with predetermined portions of each of the strands for a period of time sufficient to cause combustion of at least some of the fibers forming each strand.
