Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, solids are recovered from a latex stabilized with a pH sensitive emulsifier by passing carbon dioxide through the latex to lower the pH and thereby destabilize the latex and then subjecting the latex to high shear.
Abstract: A process for continuously coagulating a polymeric latex and consolidating as a paste coagulum in an apparatus comprising a barrel containing first and second feed ports, a rotor having opposed rows of angled tab blades and opposed wiper blades, a feed and closure means and a discharge port in an end of said barrel opposed to said feed ports, the steps comprising, continuously feeding an aqueous latex and an organic solvent simultaneously with a coagulant to said apparatus, continuously mixing said feeds and coagulating said latex forming a coagulum, consolidating said coagulum as a solvent polymer phase having the aqueous phase dispersed therein, said coagulum taking the form of a paste.
Abstract: There is disclosed a process for preparing a latex comprising grafted rubber particles for ABS polyblends that is free of coagulum, the steps comprising, preparing said latex and passing it through a porous filter bed means comprising agglomerated particles of said latex, removing said coagulum and producing a filtered latex. The process also includes the steps of blending said latex with a matrix polymer latex to form a mixed latex and coagulating said mixed latex and recovering said grafted rubber particles and matrix polymer as an ABS polyblend.
