  • Publication number: 20090107982
Abstract: A heated breathing circuit detection system verifies the proper set up and connection of a breathing circuit to a heater unit of a humidification system. The detection system automatically detects that the breathing circuit is connected to the heater unit, and the nature of the heating circuit(s) thereof. In one embodiment, the resistance of the heating circuit(s) is determined and compared to an expected resistance or range of acceptable resistances to determine if the heater circuit(s) is properly or actually attached and properly operating. The humidification system also has the ability to determine the delivery mode of the breathing circuit, i.e., whether a single inspiratory limb, or both inspiratory and expiratory limbs, is connected to the heater unit.

  • Patent number: 6715743
Abstract: A gas humidifier provides a continuous flow of gas through two stages of bubbling with an intermediate heating stage. Gas is introduced into an enclosure containing a quantity of bulk water by pumping the gas into a gas entry pipe or tube. The gas exits the gas entry pipe to bubble up through a bubbling evaporator. At the water surface of the bubbling evaporator, a heating element heats the gas-vapor mixture. The heated gas-vapor mixture then bubbles up through the bulk water, and the temperature of the bulk water determines the thermal cycles of the heating element. The gas-vapor mixture bubbles up through the bulk water, reaching saturation at the dew point. The saturated gas is then directed from the humidifier for use.

  • Patent number: 5078922
Abstract: An improved bubbler has walls formed of thin stainless steel. A hollow cylindrical body member forms a cylindrical sidewall and has welded to it a top end cap and a bottom end cap. A horizontally disposed sparger tube is connected to the carrier-gas inlet tube and is positioned within the bubbler chamber adjacent to the bottom end cap. The sparger tube has a plurality of horizontally spaced-apart exit holes formed therein for providing a plurality of carrier-gas streams into the liquid chemical. The carrier gas bubbles up through the liquid chemical, causing the liquid chemical to vaporize and diffuse into the carrier gas. A substantially uniform temperature throughout the chemical liquid is provided with a heat-conductive enclosure formed of aluminum plates which are thicker than the walls of the bubbler chamber and which contact and entirely surround the exterior surface of the stainless steel bubbler chamber.

  • Patent number: 4753758
Abstract: A humidifier assembly is disclosed. The humidifier assembly includes a housing, a heater in the housing, a hollow shell on the housing, a partition wall within the shell, and a liquid water inlet that is unitary with the hollow shell. The heater provides an exposed heated surface for contacting liquid water in a direct heat transfer relationship. The hollow shell and the partition wall together define a humidification chamber. The hollow shell also defines a breathable gas inlet and a humidified, breathable gas outlet, both of which communicate with the humidification chamber. The partition wall includes a hydrophobic filter that permits water vapor but not liquid water to pass therethrough. The hollow shell, the partition, wall and the housing together define a liquid water-tight but water vapor permeable water reservoir between the partition wall and the heater.
