Patent number: 4429674Abstract: A multicylinder internal combustion engine, especially a self-igniting internal combustion engine, with supply ducts leading to the cylinders which supply ducts emanate from a common fuel supply chamber with the ducts being supplied with a fuel-gas mixture. The fuel-gas mixture is present in a mist form in the supply chamber with the fuel, with a substantially identical droplet size, exhibiting a droplet diameter at which a flow characteristic is obtained for the droplets in the ducts leading to the cylinders which is respectively at least approximately identical to the flow characteristic of the gas. The fuel is fed to the common supply chamber continuously by way of an injection device with the premixed fuel-gas mixture, which is at a pressure elevated with respect to the pressure level in the supply chamber, exiting from the injection device at a speed of sound with atomization of its proportion of fuel, on account of a pressure jump at a cross section of the discharge orifice of the injection device.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 1981Date of Patent: February 7, 1984Assignee: Daimler-Benz AktiengesellschaftInventor: Bernd-Eric Lubbing

Patent number: 4427604Abstract: An improved carburetor for an internal combustion engine which eliminates the conventional automatic choke mechanism. A pair of fabric absorbent wicks are suspended in the vaporizing chamber of the carburetor in alignment with the high speed gasoline jets. The wicks partially surround the respective venturis and hang downwardly within the chamber to a level beneath the venturis. On starting of the engine, a manually operated primer pump operates to discharge fuel through the jets into contact with the wicks to thereby saturate the absorbent material. The absorbed fuel is vaporized and drawn along with air into the engine.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 1982Date of Patent: January 24, 1984Inventor: Donald J. Pawelski

Patent number: 4396372Abstract: A burner system adapted to vaporize liquid fuel, generally kerosene, and burn gaseous fuel in blue flames includes an evaporator heated by a heater to about 250.degree.-300.degree. C. to vaporize the kerosene. The evaporator is thermally insulated from a premix passage and a burner, to reduce the time required for preheating the evaporator. At the time of ignition, the volume of a portion of primary air supplied to the evaporator is reduced below the corresponding volume supplied in maximum combustion condition and the volume of the kerosene supplied to the evaporator is substantially equal to the corresponding volume supplied in maximum combustion condition. This enables a premix of liquid and air within a combustible limit to be supplied to flame ports even if part of the premixture forms dew in the premix passage, and allows an enriched premixture to flow out of the flame ports at low velocity to facilitate ignition.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 1980Date of Patent: August 2, 1983Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Michiaki Matumoto, Mitsuo Mimura, Takeshi Imaizumi

Patent number: 4375438Abstract: A carburetor has a main body provided with a float bowl for holding a volatile liquid fuel, at least one barrel through which combustion air flows, and a fuel supply passage leading from the float bowl to the region of the barrel, all of which is generally conventional. In addition, the carburetor is provided at the entrance to the barrel with a circular discharge nozzle for introducing the fuel into the combustion air. To this end, the nozzle is in communication with the fuel supply passage and is configured to hold a pool of the volatile liquid fuel which flows from the float bowl through the passage and into the nozzle. The nozzle contains apertures which open toward the airstream so that the pressure within the nozzle generally equalizes with that of the airstream. As a consequence, the fuel evaporates quite readily from the pool, and the vaporized fuel escapes into the airstream in sufficient quantity to produce a combustible mixture.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1981Date of Patent: March 1, 1983Inventor: Randolph W.
