Abstract: The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for the continuous manufacture of longitudinally slit foam pipes using an internal core and two outer mold portions, externally and spacedly surrounding the core, whereby the two outer mold portions are displaced in movement-conforming manner along a path with the formation of a continuous, annular channel open towards a core support and whereby further a sheet is curved in tubular or U-shaped manner, and just before entering the annular channel is supplied with a foam base material which is completely foamed in the annular channel, whereby the foamed hollow profile is formed.
Abstract: Method and apparatus for extruding expandable thermoplastic material having a cellular internal body portion and formed thereon a substantially non-cellular high density skin. The extruded material is contacted by a pair of continuously traveling temperature controlled belts immediately upon leaving the extrusion die which serve to form the high density skin thereon and the spacing of the belts is selectively controlled downstream from the extrusion die with the use of selectively adjustable belt backing members. Selectively controlling the spacing of the belts while the extruded material is undergoing expansion or foaming results in a predetermined internal cellular structure of said extruded material especially with regard to the size and distribution of the cells across a cross-section of the material.
Abstract: The apparatus includes a stationary hollow mandrel supported at one end, a pair of forming shoes over which strips of material are respectively pulled longitudinally of the mandrel to provide a cylindrical inner liner surrounding the mandrel and a cylindrical outer jacket surrounding the inner liner in spaced relationship thereto, a conduit having an outlet end portion disposed within the outer jacket above the inner liner, supply means for supplying foamable hardenable liquid material to an inlet end portion of the conduit, additional supply means for separately supplying a fast acting catalyst to the foamable material in the conduit, means for reciprocating the outlet end portion of the conduit transversely over the inner liner, conveyor-mold means confining the outer jacket as the foamable material foams and cures, rotatable tire means for pulling the insulation formed by the outer jacket, the cured foam, and the inner liner off the mandrel longitudinally thereof, a traveling saw for cutting the insulation

Abstract: Walled structures are prepared from foam-in-place components such as those used to prepare rigid polyurethane foams wherein successive strips of foam are deposited and hardened within a three-sided enclosure having a generally H-shaped configuration. A foraminous scrim such as glass fiber mesh forms part of the vertical legs of the H and foam is disposed below the cross piece of the H to bond to adjacent scrim facing sheets and scrim of a previously disclosed strip. The foam is significantly reinforced, joined to the previously deposited structure and foaming components are isolated from depositing apparatus.
Abstract: A coaxial cable having improved mechanical and electrical properties comprising an inner conductor; an outer inert gas blown cellular ethylene or propylene polymer dielectric layer having in unexpanded form a density of about 0.86 to 0.96 grams per cubic centimeter, a melt index of about 0.05 to 10 decigrams per minute and an expanded density up to 0.6 grams per cubic centimeter, said core member having a dissipation factor value of .ltoreq. 250 microradians at an electrical transmission frequency range of from 50 to 300 mega Hertz; and an outer coaxial conductor.
Abstract: A process is provided for the continuous production of a laminated product having a foam core between two substantially impermeable cover sheets one of which has longitudinally extending, transversely spaced inwardly directed recesses therein wherein a porous web is placed over the sheet having the recesses and a foamable liquid reaction mixture is poured over the web whereby only a part of the foamable reaction mixture passes through the web into the recesses.
Abstract: A method of making a reinforced insulating foam wherein an open weave fabric is tufted with loops similar to the making of a shag rug in the textile industry. Foaming material is then inserted into the open weave fabric on the side opposite that of the tufted fibers and expanded through the fabric and around the fibers. A rigid non-sticking backing plate is used to direct the foam through the woven fabric such that the fabric is at the surface of the composition and thus may be bonded to the container walls. When foamed downwardly, gravity assists to produce a less dense foam and the fibers are straightened by the foaming action.
Abstract: Continuous foam blocks with rectangular cross-section are produced on a side-limited conveyor band by feeding a foamable mixture to a cover foil travelling with said conveyor band and covering the free surface of the mixture with a bearing layer not earlier than immediately after the supply of the mixture and not later than before the zone in which a skin would be formed on the free surface of the block.
