    Abstract: Underground pipelines that carry wastewater water, natural gas and industrial fluids deteriorate with age. Shown is a process and apparatus for installing a thermoplastic liner in such existing pipelines to accomplish in situ rehabilitation. It involves extruding a tube of thermoplastic liner material within the interior of a pipeline in situ, said tube having an outside diameter smaller than the inside diameter of said pipeline. The tube is next expanded so that the outside diameter of said tube is essentially equal to the inside diameter of said pipeline. The expanded tube is then cooled and hardened in a liner configuration.

    Abstract: A method is provided for lining a pipe wherein a thermoplastic liner is initially formed in a cylindrical shape with a diameter slightly larger than the internal diameter of the pipe. The liner is temporarily deformed at an elevated temperature to a different cross-section, preferably U-shaped, to reduce its overall cross-sectional dimension to facilitate insertion into the pipe to be lined. The deformation occurs with substantially comparable elongation of the pipe lining along its opposite sides thereby precluding variations in wall thickness and stress in the pipe. Once inserted, the liner is pressurized and reheated first to a temperature below its crystallization temperature to round the lining in the pipe and subsequently, further pressurized and reheated to a second temperature higher than the crystallization temperature to cause the liner to retain its original round shape.

The plastic tube as wound on the drum can be heated and softened uniformly at every portion over the entire length thereof and can further be held so softened also during the insertion of the tube through the pipe. The tube can be easily passed through an intermediate bent pipe portion, if any, and efficiently inserted through the pipe.

    Abstract: A thin, flexible tubular membrane provides a heat containment tube for inserting into and inflation within an underground conduit to be repaired. Folded rigid thermoplastic pipe is inserted into the tube while hot and flexible. The tubular membrane is pressurized to exclude unwanted fluids from within the existing conduit. Hot stem is injected into the tube to heat the pipe full-length externally and internally until flexible. The pipe is then rounded and expanded against the walls of the conduit with the tube therebetween. The rounding and expanding of the pipe is carried out progressively by moving a plug through the pipe and by injecting hot steam under pressure behind the plug.

    Abstract: A method for producing a sleeve having a closed end by extruding a forming material from a mouthpiece. As a result, an annular space is formed by the mouthpiece, core member and outer die. The forming material is then supplied into the annular space and extruded to form the closed end of the sleeve. After the outer die has been removed from the mouthpiece, the piston member is caused to slide relative to the mouthpiece and at the same time the air is blown into an inside of the closed end through the air communication aperture of the piston, while the forming material is further supplied and extruded from the mouthpiece to form the closed end sleeve.

The tube is heated by passing a heating fluid through the bores. The tube having the large wall thickness can be uniformly heated throughout the entire wall thickness so as to be inflated fully by the application of pressure, free of the likelihood of insufficient inflation or rupture and to line the pipe.

    Abstract: A tube or hollow body of a plastic material having memory characteristics is formed in a mold body having interior undulations or grooves. Pressure is applied to the interior of the plastic tube, while the tube is at a temperature above its softening point, to expand the tube into the configuration of the interior of the mold body. The pressure is maintained while the tube is cooled. After cooling, the tube is extracted axially from the mold body, and is reheated to cause the tube, by virtue of its memory characteristics, to return to the shape it had while in the mold, thereby eliminating the distortion and stretching occurring during removal from the mold. The mold body can be a tubular corrugated casing or stainless steel with a relatively thin wall, which cannot be taken apart. End assemblies are provided to hold and seal the tube ends while the tube is expanded in the mold body, by pressure applied through one of the end assemblies. The preferred plastic material is PTFE (TEFLON).

The pipe portion can be lined from the ground surface efficiently without necessitating labor for excavation of the ground, cutting off the branch pipe portion and restoring the piping to the original state.

The preheating of the unenlarged portion of the plastic tube renders the pig movable through the tube at an increased speed to achieve an improved work efficiency.

    Abstract: A mandrel assembly supports an umbilical cord during the shaping and curing of the cord for use as a vascular graft. The mandrel assembly has a pair of mandrel members adapted to be releasably connected in end-to-end relation. Adjacent end sections of the mandrel members have reduced cross sectional shapes to provide the graft with a throat to restrict the flow of blood through the vascular graft. Each mandrel member has a low friction outer surface to facilitate the insertion and withdrawal of the mandrel member from the lumen of the umbilical cord. In one embodiment, the adjacent ends and neck portions of the mandrel members have small holes. A vacuum pump draws air from within the mandrel members to withdraw moisture from the tissue of the umbilical cord and hold the umbilical cord in conforming relationship with the joined mandrel members during the forming and curing of the umbilical cord.

    Abstract: A method and an apparatus are presented for forming couplings from blanks made from lengths of extruded plastic pipe, to join pipe together. The blank is cut from the length of extruded pipe and heated to the thermoplastic point. The heated blank is mounted between two mandrels which have a slight taper toward the ends, which are beveled. The ends of the mandrels are brought together inside the blank at a uniform rate and force. The pressure between the ends of the mandrels causes a bulge in the blank. A split die clamps around the blank at about the bulge, causing the bulge to collapse and forming a ridge in the inside surface of the blank. Coolant circulates in the mandrels and cools the inside surface of the blank. The mandrels are then withdrawn, leaving the formed blank in the split die.

    Abstract: The necks 10 of round bottomed plastic bottles 11 are fed into peripheral notches 9 of an upper turret plate 6, and stabilizing cups 47 are fed onto support plates 49 of vertically movable centering sockets 45 slidable in a lower turret plate 7 and disposed coaxially below the bottles. Pressurized gas in supplied to the bottles by vertically reciprocable stopper posts 23 to implement monitored seal testing, and while the bottles are stiffened by the gas the cups are adhesively applied from below. The various movements are synchronously controlled by rollers 33, 42 riding on circular cams 35, 44.

    Abstract: A method is presented for forming couplings from blanks made from lengths of extruded plastic pipe, to join pipe together. The blank is cut from the length of extruded pipe and heated to the thermoplastic point. The heated blank is mounted between two mandrels which have a slight taper toward the ends, which are beveled. The ends of the mandrels are brought together inside the blank at a uniform rate and force. The pressure between the ends of the mandrels causes a bulge in the blank. A split die clamps around the blank at about the bulge, causing the bulge to collapse and forming a ridge in the inside surface of the blank. Coolant circulates in the mandrels and cools the inside surface of the blank. The mandrels are then withdrawn, leaving the formed blank in the split die.

    Abstract: A method of breaking loose a vulcanized hose from a rigid mandrel on which the hose has been vulcanized is described. A first end of the hose is clamped securely to prevent movement relative to the mandrel. The second end of the hose is clamped less securely so as to permit movement relative to the mandrel. Fluid pressure is thereafter introduced between the hose and the mandrel thereby causing the hose to increase in diameter and shorten in length, thus breaking the hose loose of its associated mandrel.
