Particular Or Specific Manner Of Positioning, Arranging, Or Conveying Of Single Article Or Preform (e.g., Utilizing Spacer, Etc.) During Sintering, Vitrifying, Or Drying Patents (Class 264/671)
  • Patent number: 5720911
Abstract: A method of making a boron carbide article by sintering includes mixing boron carbide with an epoxidized resin in solution and drying to form a granulated homogenized mixture and a carbonization cycle in which the mixture is maintained at at least two constant temperatures for predetermined times. The rates of temperature rise are at controlled rates sufficient to allow outgassing of the gases evolved during the decomposition of the resin.

  • Patent number: 5705122
Abstract: The invention pertains to a composite ceramic fibre which is made from a self-supporting composite polymeric fibre by the conjugate spinning of at least two dissimilar pre-ceramic polymers in shapes varying from cylindrical to ribbon-like, and pyrolysing the spun fibre to form a composite bilateral, core sheath or matrix-fibril ceramic fibre having regions with ceramic compositions derived from each of the polymers, enabling physical and chemical characteristics to be widely varied for use as matrix reinforcements and other applications. A pyrolysis furnace includes countercurrent controlled atmosphere gas flow for chemically stabilizing or modifying the fibres.

  • Patent number: 5628849
Abstract: A single furnace loading cycle technique and a ventable sintering box therefor are disclosed for the sintering of products, such as, ceramic substrates. The sintering box includes a closeable cover which is held open by collapsible or deformable or sensitive spacers in a first furnace temperature range. The sensitive spacers collapse or deform in a higher temperature range to seal closed the box and the substrates therein. Additional spacers may be used for applying weight upon the substrates at the higher temperature range. Thus, volatile agents within the substrates are permitted to escape in the first temperature range but are prevented from escaping in the higher temperature range and in situ sintering weights can be applied without removing the substrates from the furnace.
