  • Patent number: 6555047
Abstract: A method for producing open-ended biaxially oriented containers includes forming a biaxially oriented intermediate by blow forming, without plug assist, a sheet of unoriented thermoplastic material into a forming tube to a depth of draw sufficient for full orientation of the side walls. The blow formed intermediate is placed on a male form a predetermined size, shape, and texture. The intermediate is heated above the orientation temperature of the thermoplastic material to heat shrink the intermediate onto the surface of the male form. The formed container is then removed from the male form.

  • Patent number: 6251334
Abstract: The effects of interfacial transition between organic and inorganic layers of a multilayer construction are ameliorated by incorporating an inorganic component within the matrix of the organic layer. In a first aspect, a construction having adjacent organic and inorganic layers is fabricated by depositing a curable polymer, softening the polymer, and integrating an inorganic material therewith. The polymer is then cured to immobilize the integrated deposition material, and the desired inorganic layer is applied over the deposited inorganic material (and any exposed portions of the polymer). In a second aspect, a graded structure is built up on a substrate in successive deposition steps. Both polymer precursors and an inorganic filler material are deposited in stages, with each stage containing a desired ratio of polymer to filler.

  • Patent number: 6093364
Abstract: A method for producing open-ended biaxially oriented containers includes forming a biaxially oriented intermediate by blow forming, without plug assist, a sheet of unoriented thermoplastic material into a forming tube to a depth of draw sufficient for full orientation of the side walls. During blow forming the thermoplastic material is prevented from sticking to the side walls of the forming tube. The blow formed intermediate is placed on a male form a predetermined size, shape and texture. The intermediate is heated above the orientation temperature of the thermoplastic material to heat shrink the intermediate onto the surface of the male form. The formed container is then removed from the male form.

  • Patent number: 5747130
Abstract: A biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate resin bottle-shaped container, and method of blow-molding the same, is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of heating the body portion of a preform at 90.degree. to 130.degree. C., biaxial-orientation blow-molding the preform in a primary blowing mold heated at 110.degree. to 230.degree. C. to form a primary intermediate molded bottle-shaped piece, heating the primary intermediate molded bottle-shaped piece at 130.degree. to 255.degree. C. or at a temperature which is at least 20.degree. C. greater than the primary blowing mold temperature to form a secondary intermediate molded bottle-shaped piece, and blow-molding the secondary intermediate molded bottle-shaped piece in a secondary blowing mold heated at 100.degree. to 150.degree. C. to form a bottle-shaped container. The temperature of the secondary blowing mold is several degrees greater than the maximum temperature the molded bottle-shaped container will be subjected to during use.

  • Patent number: 5683648
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing a thermoplastic container-shaped intermediate or article having biaxially oriented side walls and a bottom having an unoriented portion surrounded by a biaxially oriented transparent portion. In the method, a sheet of thermoplastic at its orientation temperature is secured over the mouth of a forming tube. A plunger having a circumscribing sharp edged lip and a plunger follower sandwich the thermoplastic sheet and the plunger and plunger follower are driven into the forming tube while preventing the circumscribed portion of the thermoplastic from becoming oriented. Thereafter the thermoplastic is blow formed to yield a container-shaped intermediate. The final container is formed by heat shrinking the intermediate onto a male form having a predetermined size, shape and texture. The apparatus includes the forming tube, plunger, plunger follower and pressurized air for performing the method.

  • Patent number: 5653935
Abstract: In a method for manufacturing a thermoplasic pipe a pipe-shaped blank having larger wall thickness and less diameter than the completed thermoplastic pipe is positioned in a cylindrical chamber. The blank is formed by being softened and expanded into engagement with the inner surface of the chamber. A sealing ring is then mounted in an end portion of the plastic pipe by positioning the sealing ring in the expanded blank and shrinking the blank around the sealing ring by heating the pipe end portion.

  • Patent number: 5500181
Abstract: A balloon catheter, having a non-linear compliance curve, made up of a single layered balloon, that was molded from a polymeric material to have a specific nominal diameter and then shrunk to a diameter that is less than the specific nominal diameter. When the shrunk balloon is expanded it has the characteristics of a compliant balloon until its diameter has been expanded to its original specific nominal diameter after which it follows the non compliant compliance curve that it would have had it not been shrunk.

  • Patent number: 5472660
Abstract: Methods for the formation of biaxially oriented thermoplastic articles having flat surfaces or sharp contours, along with the articles themselves. Such methods relate to blow forming a sheet of unoriented thermoplastic material to form biaxially oriented shaped intermediates, followed by the heat-shrinking of the biaxially oriented intermediates onto a male form to produce articles of exacting dimensions and flat surfaces or sharply defined contours. Such thermoplastic articles include autoclavable, hot fillable, heat stable, transparent PET containers.
