Patent number: 9463498Abstract: An apparatus and method of uniformly heating, rheologically softening, and thermoplastically forming metallic glasses rapidly into a net shape using a rapid capacitor discharge forming (RCDF) tool are provided. The RCDF method utilizes the discharge of electrical energy stored in a capacitor to uniformly and rapidly heat a sample or charge of metallic glass alloy to a predetermined “process temperature” between the glass transition temperature of the amorphous material and the equilibrium melting point of the alloy in a time scale of several milliseconds or less. Once the sample is uniformly heated such that the entire sample block has a sufficiently low process viscosity it may be shaped into high quality amorphous bulk articles via any number of techniques including, for example, injection molding, dynamic forging, stamp forging, sheet forming, and blow molding in a time frame of less than 1 second.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 2015Date of Patent: October 11, 2016Assignee: California Institute of TechnologyInventors: William L. Patent number: 4632366Abstract: A normalizer for linear welds in continuous pipes, to travel along the side a pipeline during operation. The normalizer comprises an induction heater supported on a mounting assembly. A power source is provided for the induction heater and an electrical control means controls the power from the power source to the induction heater. A mechanical means continuously controls the elevation and lateral placement of the mounting assembly and induction heater with respect to those of the pipe. A mechanical control means enables continuous control of the lateral placement of the mounting assembly and induction heater with respect to the pipe weld to be normalized and ensures proper placement of the induction heater over that weld. A spacer means permits adjustable spacing of the induction heater a predetermined distance from the pipe weld to be normalized, to provide a predetermined air gap between the induction heater and that weld.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 1984Date of Patent: December 30, 1986Assignee: Pipemakers, Inc.Inventor: Douglas L. Patent number: 4623129Abstract: A leading end portion (33) of a supply of cordge (31) is clamped to a mandrel (32) such that it is straight, after which a plurality of convolutions of the cordage are wound on the mandrel. The cordage is severed from the supply and a trailing end portion (34) of the wound cordage is clamped to the mandrel in a manner which causes it to be straight and hence suitable for termination with a modular plug (37). The coiled cordage is heated and cooled and is then removed from the mandrel while simultaneously the direction of the helices is reversed. Then the cordage is severed at a predetermined location to produce two retractile cords, for example, one including the leading end portion of the length of wound cordage and a newly formed straight trailing portion. The second cord includes a newly formed straight leading end portion and the initial trailing end portion. The newly formed end portion of each cord is caused to be held in a straight configuration and annealed to cause it to retain that configuration.Type: GrantFiled: July 10, 1985Date of Patent: November 18, 1986Assignee: AT&T Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Robert P. Patent number: 4529175Abstract: It is known to anneal non-ferrous strip material by passing the strip continuously around a pair of spaced pulleys and effecting a short circuit between the incoming and outgoing strip material to form a closed electrical loop of continuously moving strip material around the pulleys. The material in the closed moving loop is heated to anneal temperature by inserting an induction coil in the run around the pulleys so that under electrical inductive effects a current is induced in the loop thus raising its temperature. The incoming and outgoing strip material overlaps in the groove of one of the pulleys, the incoming material being fed into the loop formation at the point of overlap in a spiralling path which leads or directs the strip laterally and towards the plane of the annealing loop. Loading of the pulleys is thus made easier, arcing and sparking is avoided at overlap, and the life of the system is extended.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 1983Date of Patent: July 16, 1985Assignee: Beta Instrument Company LimitedInventor: John Kyriakis

Patent number: 4437901Abstract: Solution heat treatment of a rapidly advancing intermediate metallic product (26) is accomplished by preheating the product in a first zone (27) by conventional means, a great length of the product is maintained at the desired temperature in a second zone (36), and the heated product is quenched in a third zone (40) in a special apparatus (25), before further processing.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1981Date of Patent: March 20, 1984Assignee: Southwire CompanyInventor: Bobby C. Patent number: 4431168Abstract: A method and apparatus for heat treating and especially annealing of elongate metallic materials such as wire wherein the wire (24) given a longer length exposure to complete the heat treatment of the wire at higher line speeds. This is accomplished either by adding a heated storage chamber (41) holding a great length of wire (24) in sequence with conventional or modified annealing apparatus, or by substitution of a special apparatus (100) for the existing conventional annealing apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1981Date of Patent: February 14, 1984Assignee: Southwire CompanyInventor: Joseph MacCraven

Patent number: 4428563Abstract: In the manufacture of tubing, and particularly finned tubing, for use by the heat transfer industry in the manufacture of heat exchangers, annealed ends and lands are desirable in certain applications to facilitate the assembly of the tubes to headers and baffles by expanding techniques. Such spot-annealed portions can be produced on a continuous basis by the described apparatus in which the moving tube is passed through a heating chamber which reciprocates on a carriage in the direction of tube movement. The heating chamber has a pair of spaced, power-actuated clamps which grip the tubing at the ends of a discrete length portion. The heating chamber and carriage are moved with the tube while it is clamped to provide sufficient heating time to anneal the discrete length portion. The carriage then returns to its starting position. Heating of the discrete clamped tubing portion can be by a resistance technique through the clamps or by other techniques such as induction heating or gas radiant heat.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 1983Date of Patent: January 31, 1984Assignee: UOP Inc.Inventors: James L. Patent number: 4321449Abstract: An apparatus for heating blooms or slabs comprises a tunnel with a conveyor for supporting successive slabs and moving them along the length of the tunnel. The blooms rest flat on the conveyor rather than on edge. Polyphased inductors are located above and under the path of the bloom to create a travelling wave magnetic field along the tunnel.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 1979Date of Patent: March 23, 1982Inventor: Rene Courdille

Patent number: 4280857Abstract: An apparatus and method of continuously drawing and annealing wire in a slip mode. The method comprises the steps of directing a wire successively through a plurality of drawing dies of a continuous wire drawing machine, and from the next to the last die of the machine continuously directing the wire to and through apparatus for annealing the wire. From the annealing apparatus the wire is continuously returned to the machine for a final drawing operation. Before the wire is returned to the machine, however, the temperature of the wire is controlled to provide the wire with metallurgical properties suitable for further processing, such as the final drawing operation.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 1979Date of Patent: July 28, 1981Assignee: Aluminum Company of AmericaInventors: H.
